NEIGHBORS have mouthed off after an EV driver took his charging challenges to a city hall.
A driver in Dorchester, Massachusetts, bought a new Tesla – he had to work his way over annoyed neighbors and decades-old road laws to build the proper at-home charging station.
Matt Malloy, CEO of Dorchester Brewing Company, complained about EV charging near his home in Boston's largest neighborhood, according to The Boston Globe.
After purchasing a new Tesla, Malloy said it was difficult to charge his vehicle in the major city.
Slower Level 2 chargers dotted Boston, he said.
The chargers can take up to 12 hours to fill an EV battery.
Malloy said the Level 3 charging stations – capable of charging batteries to 80% in less than an hour – were too sparse.
He said he needed to build a new paver driveway, complete with a charging station, to transition to a non-tailpipe-emitting vehicle.
But the driveway required a new pavement plan, the installation of a ChargePoint-provided hub, and a cut to the city-maintained curb, according to Malloy.
Neighbors hated his parking plan.
"He calls it a driveway, but it's a parking space in his front lawn," an anonymous neighbor said to The Globe.
"It's absurd, it's ridiculous, and it looks stupid."
<!-- End of Brightcove Player --> However, Malloy won the fight to cut the curb outside his victorian home and build the eco-friendly driveway.
"I'm very happy," the Tesla driver said after the project's completion.
"I encourage other people to do it."
Malloy's driveway is a product of constant lobbying at City Hall – a process that has made him a polarizing figure to many in the neighborhood.
"Everyone was very excited about it," Andrea Barsomian-Dietrich, a neighbor, said while celebrating Malloy's new at-home charger.
"I think people ended up feeling really badly that it took him so much work."

"Certainly, a win-win would have been the installation of a Level 3 charger at Dorchester Brewing Company," Christine Araujo, the former chairwoman of the city's Zoning Board of Appeal, wrote to The Globe in a letter.
She wrote a public charger would have contributed to "both his needs and those of patrons."
But Malloy seems unphased by the conjecture.
"I love all my neighbors," he told the site.
"Everyone has a right to an opinion."
