Counsell thinks an MLB rule that only affects Ohtani and the Dodgers is 'bizarre'

CHICAGO (AP) — Cubs manager Craig Counsell thinks a Major League Baseball rule that allows the Los Angeles Dodgers to carry 14 pitchers because of Shohei Ohtani is “bizarre.”

Associated Press

Major league teams are allowed to have a maximum of 13 pitchers on their active 26-man roster from opening day through Aug. 31. From Sept. 1 through the end of the season, the roster limits increase to 14 pitchers and 28 active players.

But Ohtani is designated as a two-way player, which means he doesn't count as a pitcher. So the reigning World Series champions have a total of 14 pitchers on their active roster.

Asked about the 13-pitcher limit before Monday's series opener against Philadelphia, Counsell said he has never understood the reasoning for the restriction.

“It’s a rule to help offense, I think, more than anything, if you ask me,” Counsell said. “And then there’s one team that’s allowed to carry basically one of both, and that he gets special consideration. Which is probably the most bizarre rule. ... For one team.”

The two-way player designation is for players with at least 20 innings pitched in the major leagues and at least 20 big league starts as a position player or designated hitter with at least three plate appearances in each of those games. The player has to reach those numbers in the current or any one of the two most recent seasons.

The designation went into effect for the 2020 season. The 31-year-old Ohtani is the only current player who meets the criteria.

“There’s not another player like that, but one team gets different rules for that player,” said Counsell, who played in the majors for 16 years.

Frank Sinatra's Daughter Slams Donald Trump For Posting His Song

Nancy Sinatramade her feelings clear after President Donald Trump shared a clip of her late father performing one of his most iconic songs. The singer’s daughter took to social media to condemn the post, while also addressing what could be done about it.

Nancy Sinatra calls out Donald Trump for using Frank’s song

Nancy Sinatra has publicly slammed President Donald Trump for sharing a clip of her father, Frank Sinatra, performing “My Way.” The 85-year-old took to X on Sunday, April 19, calling Trump’s post “a sacrilege.”

Trump, 79, posted a nearly four-minute clip of Frank Sinatra’s live performance of “My Way” on Truth Social on Saturday, April 18. The president did not add any context to the post, sparking widespread speculation about his intentions.

When a fan asked Nancy if anything could be done about Trump’s post, she responded directly. “Unfortunately, no. The only people who can do something are the publishers,” she wrote via X.

Nancy also reposted comments from fans highlighting her father’s feelings toward the president. “Nancy Sinatra will confirm again that her father loathed Donald Trump,” one reposted comment read. Another fan added, “Trump may love Sinatra, but Sinatra did not love Trump.” Frank Sinatra died at age 82 in 1998.

Some users speculated the post signaled declining health, which has been rumored in recent weeks. White House communications director Steven Cheung denied claims that Trump was hospitalized earlier this month. Others connected the post to ongoing military operations in Iran, which began in February when the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on the country.

One user noted Trump has made three posts in roughly six days built around themes of legacy, morality, and reflection. The user called it “a pattern worth naming,” adding that “the context underneath” includes the fact that Trump turns 80 in June. He remains the oldest person ever to serve as U.S. president, a record he previously took from himself.

Fernando Mendoza, Diego Pavia, KC Concepcion headline long list of Latino prospects in NFL draft

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —Fernando Mendozaand Diego Pavia pulled off an unprecedented double at the Heisman Trophy ceremony in December. It marked the first time in the award's history that two Latino players were finalists.

Indiana Pro Day Football

Even more notable: Mendoza, of Indiana, joined Jim Plunkett and Bryce Young as just the third Latino to win the trophy whilePavia, from Vanderbilt, was the runner-up.

Now with the NFL draft almost here, Mendoza and Pavia continue to drive conversation about where they will go. Mendoza is projected to be the No. 1 selection Thursday night, likely going to the quarterback-needy Las Vegas Raiders, while Pavia hopes to prove any lingering doubters wrong.

And while the two quarterbacks are the headliners, they are certainlynot the only Latino prospectshoping to hear their names called before the draft ends Saturday.

Here's a look at nine players who attended the NFL's annual scouting combine in Indianapolis in February.

QB Fernando Mendoza, Indiana

The Heisman Trophy winner and national championship-winning quarterback seems a virtual lock to be the No. 1 pick after throwing for 3,535 yards, leading the nation with 41 TD passes and running for seven more scores, including the memorable TD that helped seal Indiana's national title. Mendoza eagerly embraces his Cuban lineage. He has talked often about the role his parents and family played in his growth as a player, and his four grandparents who fled Cuba in 1959.

WR KC Concepcion, Texas A&M

The 5-foot-11 1/2, 196-pound, do-it-all receiver with Puerto Rican connections emerged as one of the nation's top playmakers in 2025. He was a first-team All-America selection as the all-purpose player and though his 40-yard dash time of 4.43 seconds may cause some scouts to question his top-end speed, Concepcion always seems to deliver in clutch moments or when plays appear to be over. He also has written about his speech impediment, indicating he wants to become a role model for those who “may be too scared to speak.” He could be picked on Day 1 or early on Day 2.

LB Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech

The 6-1, 231-pound Rodriguez did a little bit of everything with one of last season's top defenses. He made 128 tackles, broke up seven passes, intercepted four, forced seven fumbles, recovered two and posted one sack. And the unanimous All-American also won the Nagurski Trophy, Butkus Award, Lombardi Award and Bednarik Award on a defense stacked with future NFL players. He seemingly did it all in college, including playing quarterback at Virginia in 2021. The question is where he will land and how all that experience will translate to the pro level.

LB Taurean York, Texas A&M

At 5-11, 186 pounds, York is smaller than prototypical linebackers but could find a home by playing the trendy safety-linebacker hybrid NFL teams seem to increasingly want. He's been productive, too. The second team all-SEC selection started all three seasons with the Aggies, and he finished last season with 72 tackles and three passes defensed. He's one of five players in this draft with family ties to Mexico. Look for York to be chosen on Day 2 or early on Day 3.

QB Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt

He's one of the most polarizing players in this draft class, in part because he's not afraid to express his thoughts and in part because he stands only 5-foot-10, much shorter than most teams prefer in a quarterback. But there are two things on Pavia's resume that can't be ignored — he's routinely defied the odds and he wins. Pavia started his college career at New Mexico Military Institute, played well enough to jump to New Mexico State and then led Vanderbilt to its most successful back-to-back seasons in recent memory. Now the 2025 SEC Offensive Player of the Year and the first Heisman finalist from Vanderbilt will be waiting to find out which NFL team will give him a chance to prove himself all over again.

TE Josh Cuevas, Alabama

Cuevas has been a more proficient blocker than pass catcher at his three college stops — Cal Poly, Washington and Alabama. And though his size, 6-3 1/2, 245 pounds, may prompt some teams to project him more as a fullback than a tight end, there's plenty to like. Cuevas produced solid numbers last season with the Tide — 37 receptions, 411 yards, four TDs — and had career bests in 2022 at Cal Poly (58 catches, 678 yards, six TDs). The other thing coaches will appreciate is his accountablilty. He apologized to Alabama fans after the 2025 season-opening loss to Florida State, saying the players failed to meet the expected standard in that game. He also used his Senior Bowl platform to throw his support behind Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer.

OL Fernando Carmona, Arkansas

Carmona showed his versatility last season by moving to guard after playing left tackle the previous three seasons. That gave NFL teams a potential preview of what he could do next season with his shorter arms and massive size — 6-4 1/2, 316 pounds. He's also improved steadily in college, going from honorable mention all-Western Athletic Conference with San Jose State in 2023 to third-team all-SEC in 2024 and second-team all-SEC last year. While scouts also seem to like his energy and edge, they also realize he'll need better technique to excel at the next level.

QB Joey Aguilar, Tennessee

Aguilar is one of the rare prospects who didn't want to be on any draft list. Despite throwing for 3,565 yards and 24 touchdowns in his only season with the Volunteers, Aguilar wanted to return to school for one more year. But just days before the NFL's annual scouting combine was set to begin, a Tennessee court denied his preliminary injunction, pushing him into the draft. The decision put Aguilar in an awkward position because most of the other players had spent weeks or months preparing for the draft. That makes his landing spot — or even a selection — anybody's guess.

OL Enrique Cruz Jr., Kansas

Cruz has the size teams covet — 6-5 1/2, 313 pounds — and the versatility they like in late-round prospects because he played both left and right tackle in college. He also overcame the adversity of going from starter to backup at Syracuse by reclaiming the starting job last year at Kansas. Will it be enough to entice an NFL team? Perhaps.

Mexico to probe role of US officials killed in Chihuahua car crash, Sheinbaum says

MEXICO CITY, April 20 (Reuters) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday she was not aware U.S. embassy officials were working with the northern ‌state of Chihuahua to combat drug cartels following a car crash that killed ‌officials from both countries.

Reuters

Two U.S. officials and two Mexican state officials died in a car crash on Sunday after an operation to destroy clandestine drug laboratories in the municipality of Morelos. Sheinbaum said her government would review whether the operation violated national security law.

State Attorney General Cesar Jauregui later on Monday told local media there had been a misunderstanding and that ‌the U.S. officials who died did not take part in the lab raid.

"In Chihuahua there was no participation of any agent of any foreign entity in the operation," Jauregui told media outlet Grupo Formula.

Jauregui said only Mexican personnel, around 80 in total, took part in the operation. The U.S. officials, who have not been identified, were picked up by the group after the operation at a separate location, where they had given a ‌class on flying drones. They were being driven to the state capital when the accident occurred, Jauregui said.

Sheinbaum said during her daily morning press conference that she would ask U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson to meet with Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco to discuss the incident.

The role of U.S. personnel in anti-cartel missions is highly sensitive in ‌Mexico. Sheinbaum has repeatedly said that while intelligence sharing and security cooperation are essential to fighting organized crime, Mexico will not accept U.S. boots on the ground.

In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump has ‌called for greater use of U.S. military force to combat Mexican cartels.

The embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Mexican officials killed in the accident were the director of the state's investigation agency and an officer, state authorities ‌said on Sunday. Ambassador Johnson, in a post on X mourning the incident, did not identify the dead U.S. embassy staff.

The SEC’s most important position is suddenly its biggest strength

The most important position on the field, and the most important access point to theSECreclaiming its perch atopcollege football.

USA TODAY Sports

If there truly will be an SEC revival after the Big Ten’sthree-season streakof national championships with three different teams, it will begin and end with elite quarterback play.

Fortunately for the SEC, 2026 could be the deepest at the position in years. From Arch Manning to AJ Hill, we give you the great, the good and the unknown of the quarterback position in the SEC.

More:Spring QB competitions that could shape College Football Playoff race

1. Arch Manning, Texas

Texas quarterback Arch Manning (16) warms up before a game against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Saidhe played “pissed off”for the first half of last season, and then the offense started having fun and began playing better as a unit over the final six games of the season. OK, I’ll buy it. That, and the addition of dynamic transferWR Cam Coleman, misused for two seasons under whatever Hugh Freeze was calling that Auburn offense.

2. Sam Leavitt, LSU

The positive: Leavitt’s development underelite OC/QB coach Charlie Weis Jr. The negative: How will the surgically repaired foot (Lisfranc injury) hold up? There’s so much drama surroundingall things LSU and new coach Lane Kiffin— and to a lesser extent, Leavitt’s huge NIL deal — every game will be scrutinized and polarized.

3. Gunner Stockton, Georgia

Way undervalued player, leader and winner. What more do you want? He competed 70% of his passes, had a TD/INT ratio of 24/5, and had 10 rush TDs. In his first season as a starter. Don’t be shocked if he has a monster season.

4. Marcel Reed, Texas A&M

Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed (10) looks to pass the ball during the first half against the Miami Hurricanes at Kyle Field.

There’s a lot to like, beginning and ending with his escapability and playmaking off-schedule. Forget about forcing him into something he’s not; let him create. One big concern: Which Reed do you get? The one who played brilliantly in a road win over Notre Dame, or the one who had five turnovers (four INTs, one fumble) in the last two games of the season — Texas A&M’s only two losses (Texas, Miami).

5.Trinidad Chambliss,Ole Miss

By the end of last season, he was the most dangerous player in the SEC. There will be a drop-off without Kiffin and Weis, but how significant? A talented team rallied around Chambliss in 2025. Can a different team do it again?

HAYES:Ole Miss needs Trinidad Chambliss eligibility case success or CFP hopes go poof

6. Byrum Brown, Auburn

USF transfer will be a big problem for SEC defenses. Against Florida in Week 2 last year — when the Gators’ defense was healthy and nasty — Brown had 329 total yards (66 rush), and led a huge upset. But the USF offensive line in 2025 was light years ahead of the Auburn offensive line — which will have four new transfer starters in 2026.

7. John Mateer, Oklahoma

What looked like a breakout season in 2025 was sidetracked in late September by a thumb injury, and Mateer never really got it back. Five starters return on the offensive line. Better protection, better results.

8. Keelon Russell, Alabama

A talented thrower whowill compete with Austin Mack for the starting job. Both probably should’ve played more last season — but couldn’t because Alabama wasn’t putting away teams early. If you’re a believer in coach Kalen DeBoer and OC Ryan Grubb’s quarterback development over the years at Alabama and Washington (and why wouldn’t you be?), this could get real interesting, real quick with Russell’s obvious skills.

9. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina

Imagine being new OC/QB coach Kendal Briles. The development of uber-talented Sellers — and South Carolina coach Shane Beamer’s job — is in your hands. Beamer’s disastrous hire of Mike Shula as OC/QB coach in 2025 could eventually be his undoing at South Carolina.

10. Austin Simmons, Missouri

You want motivation? Is Simmons’ career destined to become a footnote of Chambliss’ emergence in 2025, or does he finally play to his five-star potential and become an elite dual threat player? For some reason, this feels a whole lot like Kelly Bryant in 2019.

11. George MacIntyre, Tennessee

If it’s not former five-star MacIntyre, it’s current five-star freshman Faizon Brandon. Considering Tennessee coach Josh Heupel’s history of developing the position, one of the two (or both) will eventually produce. And maybe at a high level.

12. Aaron Philo, Florida

New Florida coach Jon Sumrall got OC Buster Faulkner to leave Georgia Tech, and Faulkner got Philo to leave Atlanta and follow him to Gainesville. Everyone got what he wanted, and holdover QB Tramell Jones may still win the job. Then what?

OPINION:Billy Napier’s new edge at JMU? The culture he never had at Florida

13. Kenny Minchey, Kentucky

Lost the quarterback competition at Notre Dame, and never got on the field for significant minutes. The best thing Minchey has going for him: new Kentucky coach Will Stein’s track record with quarterbacks. Since 2020, Frank Harris (UTSA), Bo Nix (Oregon), Dillon Gabriel (Oregon) and Dante Moore (Oregon) have a combined TD/INT ratio of 176/40 — or an average of 28 TDs and six INTs a season.

14. Kamario Taylor, Mississippi State

This is based on all of two games in 2025, both ugly losses where Taylor had a handful of wow plays. There’s a lot to like about his dynamic ability, but he must become a more accurate, consistent thrower.

15. Jared Curtis, Vanderbilt

TheNo. 1 quarterback recruit in 2026, he’ll learn on the job with a rebuilt Vanderbilt offense. That’s a difficult spot for a young player against a conference full of fast, athletic defensive linemen, and defensive coordinators who can create confusion with combo coverages.

16. AJ Hill, Arkansas

Another likely first-year starter who arrived in Fayetteville from Memphis with coach Ryan Silverfield. A former consensus four-star recruit and top-five player at his position, Hill redshirted last season and will have to beat out sophomore KJ Jackson.

Luke Kennard scores 27, Lakers take Game 1 against Rockets

Luke Kennard scored 27 points and LeBron James added 19 points with 13 assists as the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers earned a 107-98 victory over the visiting Houston Rockets on Saturday in Game 1 of a Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Field Level Media

Deandre Ayton scored 19 points with 11 rebounds and Marcus Smart added 15 points with eight assists as the fourth-seeded Lakers won with leading scorers Luka Doncic (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique) watching from the bench.

"We were really poised as a team," Lakers head coach JJ Redick said. "We had a great next-play mentality. Wasn't a perfect game. None of these games are gonna be perfect. Got contributions from a lot of people in a lot of different ways and made enough winning plays, despite the turnovers and the offense rebounds."

In just his seventh start since joining the Lakers from the Atlanta Hawks at the trade deadline, Kennard went 9 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 5 from 3-point range while delivering a season high in points to fill the scoring void at guard.

"I just liked that he was aggressive shooting 3s. He played a fantastic basketball game," Redick said of Kennard. "There were a couple of shots he hesitated on but he just played aggressive tonight."

Alperen Sengun scored 19 points while Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard each added 17 for the fifth-seeded Rockets, who were playing without leading scorer Kevin Durant (knee).

Jabari Smith Jr. scored 16 points with 12 rebounds and Tari Eason also had 16 points for Houston, which has lost three consecutive road games to Los Angeles since the middle of March.

"There are some things we left on the table and didn't do as well as we could have and opportunities missed," Rockets head coach Ime Udoka said. "Some of that is just converting easy shots. But at the same time, it felt like we weren't at our best."

The Lakers shot 60.6% from the floor and 52.6% from 3-point range, while the Rockets shot 37.6% and 33.3% respectively.

Kennard helped put the Rockets away with three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. His second of the final period capped a 13-3 run and gave the Lakers an 88-72 lead with 7:58 remaining.

James made a turnaround hook inside with 4:43 remaining to put Los Angeles up 96-80. The 41-year-old added a fadeaway jumper with 2:57 remaining for a 98-84 lead.

Houston was within 100-91 with 1:40 remaining on a dunk from Thompson before Ayton put the game away for Los Angeles on a three-point play with 1:04 left for a 105-93 lead.

"I don't know if it was a deer-in-the-headlight thing," Udoka said. "We have some young guys out there, but it's not their first time. When you kind of struggle across the board like that, some nerves might have been there a little bit. We have to flush that part of it and bounce back on Tuesday."

The Lakers shot 70.6% from the floor in the fourth quarter and 56.2% in the second half.

The Rockets finished with a 44-35 rebounding advantage.

The Lakers got off to a fast start, leading by eight points in the first quarter, when James had eight assists, and took a 33-29 lead after the opening period. Los Angeles led 50-48 at the half on 64.7% shooting from the floor as Ayton scored 12 points. Sengun had 11 at the half for Houston.

3 teams to watch make potential big trade in 2026 NFL Draft: Cowboys, Rams and Jags

Latest NFL mock draft| Big Boards:Consensus Top 75•Nate Tice•Charles McDonald

Yahoo Sports

The three most interesting teams to watch in the 2026 NFL Draft from a trade perspective are the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The buzz about a Dallas move up the board is flying around the league right now, which surprises me after having talked with a talent evaluator in that franchise while putting together the2026 All-Juice teamin late March and early April. The impression I got was the Cowboys’ front office actually likes the player possibilities at their current first-round draft slots at Nos. 12 and 20 and felt like they could get future starters at those spots because of this draft’s defensive depth.

Also, the Cowboys are getting top heavy in salary and that could get worse with some future extensions, lending value to having two rookie contracts with five years of potential club control.

All of that said, I know this is really in Jerry Jones’ hands (with the better angels of Stephen Jones on his shoulder), so if there’s a player sitting in the 4-5-6 slot whom they are convinced is a future All-Pro, a willing trade partner will be sought. Even with that, I find it odd that this surface-of-the-sun heat about a Dallas move up the board would get out and be completely accurate more than a full week before the first round. More often than not, those big moves predicted so early don’t end up happening.

As for the Rams, the seemingly endless Puka Nacua drama and depth chart void after Davante Adams has me convinced they’ll target some kind of big-play weapon at No. 13 overall. It depends who is on the board or whether they might sacrifice some future draft capital to move up a few spots. I think other teams are forecasting the Rams for an offensive skill position pick, too. So things could get spicy on the draft board in the Nos. 7-12 range.

And with the Jaguars — who lack a first-round pick — I’m curious to see how general manager James Gladstone navigates having 11 draft picks, but having to wait until No. 56 overall to make a selection. I know they’ve said Brian Thomas Jr. is not available for trade, but I’ve heard teams say that before, only to see that change in the days before the draft or on the clock.

The Jaguars and Gladstone already have a reputation for liking to trade and churn. I’ll be surprised if this is a quiet draft where they sit put with their picks.

But even with the deeper roster, Mitchell still has the mentality of delivering the statement in the first game of a series.

The All-Star guard did that again Saturday afternoon with a game-high 32 points in theCavaliers' 126-113 victoryover the Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

It is an NBA-record nine straight games in which Mitchell has scored at least 30 points in a series opener.

“It’s not something like I’m searching for,” said Mitchell of trying to put up at least 30 to start a series. “It’s just something that I’m playing my game. Just trying to set a tone of aggression by getting downhill, taking the open shots, taking what’s given to me and obviously making the defense have to react.”

Mitchell’s streak began with the Utah Jazz during the 2020 playoffs — held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, during the COVID-19 pandemic — when he scored 57 points against the Denver Nuggets. That remains a Jazz playoff record and the third-highest-scoring performance in NBA postseason history.

Mitchell is 5-4 during this run in series openers, including 3-3 with Cleveland since coming over in a trade from Utah in September 2022.

James Harden, who was acquired from the LA Clippers in a trade-deadline shocker, helped settle the Cavaliers during a close first half, but it was Mitchell and Max Strus who helped deliver the knockout blows to the Raptors in the second half.

Mitchell had 13 points in the first half to Harden's 15 as the Cavaliers were up 61-54 at halftime. Mitchell scored 11 and Strus added eight as Cleveland dominated the third quarter and were up by 21 going into the final 12 minutes.

“That’s his job. That’s what he gets paid the big bucks for being aggressive, taking shots and doing his thing. We understand that, so our job is to just go out there and fulfill the roles and do other things to impact the game,” Harden said. “I think for me, it's trying to get more assists and trying to get into the paint. We've got shooting, we've got bigs who are versatile and athletic. My job is to get them the ball.”

Harden finished with 22 points and 10 assists that led to 23 points. Six of the assists went to center Jarrett Allen and forward Evan Mobley.

Mitchell's 30th point came on a driving layup with 9:28 remaining to extend Cleveland's lead to 106-84. The nine-year veteran shot 7 of 13 from inside the paint, which is something that pleased coach Kenny Atkinson.

“I said that before the game, how we’ve changed our mindset where we’ve become more rim- and paint-oriented. Don, he can try to do those pirouette 3s, but I think he was locked in on getting to the rim and made some really good decisions," Atkinson said.

Mitchell is averaging 33.1 points in series openers, second-highest in NBA history for a player who has taken part in at least 10 postseason series. His playoff average of 28.4 points is tied with LeBron James for sixth-best among players with at least 50 games.

“I thought we handled the environment and the crowd pretty well. They had a lot of guys scoring at a high rate and they got a lot of easy shots, getting to the rim and dunks," said Toronto's Scottie Barnes, who scored 21 points.

Ronaldinho, born Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, grew up in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

His father, João Moreira, was a shipyard worker, and his mother, Miguelina de Assis, was a salesperson studying to become a nurse, according toBiography.com. But soccer was always in Ronaldinho's blood.

“I come from a family where soccer has always been very present,” he toldSports Illustratedin June 2006. “My uncles, my father and my brother were all players. Living with that kind of background, I learned a great deal from them. I tried to devote myself to it more and more with the passage of time.”

Unfortunately, João died unexpectedly after hitting his head and drowning in the family’s new swimming pool when Ronaldinho was eight, per theBleacher Report.

In a January 2017 letter to his younger self forThe Players’ Tribune, the Brazilian star reflected on the pain of losing his “superhero.”

“You’re not going to feel sadness right away," he wrote. “That will come later. A few years from now, you will accept that Dad is never coming back on earth. But what I want you to understand is that every time you have a ball at your feet, Dad will be with you.”
