Waitress paraded sparkler-topped champagne bottle through bar seconds before blaze

The New Year's Eve party was well under way when tragedy struck.

As around 200 revellers were celebrating in the packed basement of Le Constellation bar, a barmaid carrying a champagne bottle topped with a sparkler made her way through the crowd.

The barmaid, carried on the shoulders of a colleague, held the bottle above her head near the basement's ceiling, setting it alight, witnesses said.

Footage taken inside shows theflames rapidly spreading along the roofabove the bar as the music continues playing at around 1:30am local time on New Year's Day. A crowd of party-goers, the vast majority being aged between 15 and 20, rushed to escape via a narrow flight of stairs through a single door.

Others tried to smash windows to escape as the fire started spreading to the ground floor. But many were left trapped inside after the basement's ceiling collapsed on top of them, witnesses said.

Several dozens of people were killed and 100 seriously injured in the fire. Many of the victims are believed to have been trapped, with reports suggesting there were not enough emergency exits.

Police are investigating whether the bar, which videos show was densely packed, had exceeded the legal limit on the number of customers.

Emma, a French witness, said the fire spread "in seconds".

"Some of the bottles were near the ceiling and it caught fire. The whole ceiling was in flames and the fire spread really fast. It happened in seconds. We all ran outside, screaming and crying," she told French news channel BFMTV.

"I saw a young man writhing in agony on the floor. His body and his hair were badly burned and half of his face had gone. I think he must have died."

Panic-stricken parents rushed to the scene from around the town and beyond to find out whether their children were trapped inside. Video showed young people piling out of the pub screaming as they escaped the flames and black smoke.

Sitting 25 miles north of the Matterhorn mountain and 81 miles south of Zurich, the upmarket resort town of Crans-Montana is popular with British tourists and visitors from elsewhere, there for the skiing and the party atmosphere.

Billed by some as the "best place to celebrate New Year's Eve" in the town, Le Constellation was packed with young people, largely aged between 15 and 20, witnesses said.

"The party was in full swing ... music and champagne flowing freely," according to one witness.

Lighting sparklers in bottles in the cramped confines of the basement had even featured in a promotional video for the venue posted on social media previously.

It showed waitresses wearing crash helmets walking through the club, waving pyrotechnics flaring out of Dom Perignon champagne bottles precariously close to the beamed ceiling.

Another witness, called Albane, said she saw the ceiling catch fire after the firework was lit in the bottle.

"It was clearly accidental," the witness added.

One young man watching from across the street said he saw about 20 people scrambling to escape the smoke and flames.

Likening what he witness to a "horror movie", he told The Telegraph: "We are broken. Apparently there were sparklers. They should be banned."

"How did this happen? I heard screaming after. People ran out everywhere and then fire engines came," he added.

A witness has desribed the 'horror' victims trying to escape the bar through a narrow staircase and door

Crans-Montana's local authority had banned fireworks and sparklers during the New Year's Eve celebrations over concerns that a lack of rain over the past month had left conditions dangerously dry, increasing the risk of fires catching and spreading quickly.

A local reported hearing loud explosions coming from the vicinity of the Le Constellation.

"I heard a number of massive bangs, which sounded like bombs going off. It was crazy," they said. "I live hundreds of yards from the bar. I heard screaming and screaming and people running."

Adrien, an eyewitness who was outside the club when the fire broke out, described the horror of watching those inside flee for their lives.

"There was a young man with burns on the pavement outside who kept saying: 'It hurts, I'm in pain, please call an ambulance.'" he said.

Helicopters and ambulances rushed to the scene, with emergency services from neighbouring countries deployed to assist the rescue operation.

The intensive care unit and operating theatre at the regional hospital were overwhelmed with victims and those suffering the worst burns were sent to university hospitals across Switzerland.

With the scale of the tragedy quickly becoming apparent, the authorities called on residents to show caution over the coming days to avoid placing further strain on the medical system.

Michela Ris, the deputy mayor of the Swiss town of Ascona, who was in Crans-Montana to celebrate New Year's Eve, described how she was still frantically searching for friends on New Year's morning.

"Some acquaintances told me about young people leaving the bar covered in blood, some without their clothes. It was a real bloodbath," she told Swiss media.

"We have friends who are not responding to messages. Maybe they are just asleep, but we don't know if, after being at our house, they went straight home or if they went for one last drink, perhaps to the very club where the tragedy took place.

"We are very worried and are trying to contact everyone, one by one, to make sure they are okay. We are devastated."

A bouquet of flowers laid as a tribute to the victims of the fire

As morning broke, residents and commuters gathered outside, many in tears, devastated at the night's events in their town.

Around 50 family members were waiting for news on their missing loved ones.

Referring to the sparkler that caused the fire, a bus driver told The Telegraph: "They're banned in a lot of clubs and they should never be allowed anywhere near crowded places. This is an absolute tragedy."

As the region declared a period of mourning Mathias Rénard, head of the regional government, told reporters: "This evening should have been a moment of celebration and coming together, but it turned into a nightmare."

Public gets glimpse of Trump's opulent Mar-a-Lago New Year's gala

A wish for "world peace," an endorsement of tariffs and $2.75 million for a painting of Jesus capped the public's peek intoPresident Donald Trump'sopulent New Year's Eve gala at Mar-a-Lago.

The president arrived at the aptly named Donald J. Trump ballroom at the Palm Beach club he has owned for 40 years just before 9 p.m. along withfirst lady Melania Trump, who was dressed in a shimmering, silver full-length dress. The first couple walked along a black carpet with "Happy New Year Mar-a-Lago" written in gold lettering and stopped before a platoon of reporters.

Asked what if he had a New Year's resolution, the president said "world peace," but then ignored questions about areported CIA strike at a coastal facility in Venezuelaearlier this week or possible U.S. military involvement in Ukraine.

On stage, the president praised the management of the country in the first 11 months of this non-consecutive second term.

"We're taking in hundreds of millions of dollars in tariffs," the president said, and again promised $1,776 checks to military service members. "We're doing great as a country. We're back. We're strong. I didn't think it could happen this fast. It's happening faster than anybody thought possible."

Former Trump legal adviser Rudy Giuliani was in attendance along with Homeland Security SecretaryKristi Noem.

The president then presided over the auction of a painting of Jesus Christ's face by artist Vanessa Horabuena. Trump said proceeds would go to St. Jude Children's Hospital and a sheriff's department, but did not specify if it would be the Palm Beach Sheriffs Office.

The president began the bidding at $100,000 but did not offer a bid thereafter.

When one bidder offered $1 million, Trump responded "he's the biggest guy on Wall Street."

The painting sold for $2.75 million.

President Donald Trump mingles with guests during a New Year's Eve event at his Mar-a-Lago club on Dec. 31, 2025 in Palm Beach, Florida. The President addressed guests and celebrated the arrival of 2026.

The evening followed an active day for Trump on social media in what was a seemingly stream of consciousness on an eclectic if not random mix of topics.

The president fired off more than 10 posts, including ones that called Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz "crooked" and alleged that 90% of the purported fraud in the state has been perpetrated by "people that came into our Country, illegally, from Somalia." Still, Trump also predicted there is "more FRAUD in California" than in Minnesota.

Speaking of the Golden State, the president also claimed "California and Colorado are two of the TOP OUTBOUND STATES IN 2025" for people seeking to move to other states.

Trump denigrated Democrats as a "bunch of cheaters and thieves" in a post calling for voter identification. And he demanded fellow Republicans give "No more money to Fat Cat Insurance Companies."

The president also stated that his administration's tariff policies "singularly" fueled "a World Record on investments," totaling "Trillions of Dollars more than" what China reaped.

Trump praised the Border Patrol for doing a "fantastic job" and stated he is "so proud that more than half are of Hispanic heritage."

"There is no group I am more proud of than Border Patrol and ICE, and nobody understands the Border better than our fantastic Hispanic population, which continues to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Trump wrote.

The president also posted that he is "removing the National Guardfrom Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland."

"We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime begins to soar again - Only a question of time!" he wrote.

Trump tells WSJ he is taking more aspirin than doctors recommend

By Jasper Ward

WASHINGTON, Jan 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he is taking a larger daily dose of aspirin than his doctors recommend.

"They ‌say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don't want thick blood pouring ‌through my heart," Trump told the paper in an interview published on Thursday. "I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?"

Trump, 79, is the second-oldest person to ever hold the presidency, following his Democratic predecessor President Joe Biden, who dropped ‌his 2024 reelection bid amid questions about his fitness for the job and was aged 82 when he left office ‍a year ago.

Trump's health has been in the spotlight in recent months due to bruises that have been spotted on his hands and an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) exam that he was reported to have undergone in October, as well as instances where ‌the Republican president closed his eyes during public events.

Daily use of aspirin can lower the chances of heart attack or stroke for people over the age of 60, according to the Mayo Clinic, which says a low dose of aspirin is most commonly 81 milligrams.

The president's doctor, Sean Barbabella, told the Journal that Trump takes 325 milligrams of aspirin daily for cardiac prevention.

The bruising is the result of him shaking so many hands, according to the White House, which said last month the MRI was preventative.

When asked about ‍the MRI, Trump and Barbabella told the Journal that the president actually got a CT scan.

Barbabella said Trump's doctors had initially said they would perform either an MRI or a CT scan but decided to do the latter "to definitively rule out any ‌cardiovascular issues."

It revealed no abnormalities, according to Barbabella.

Bye, bye: NFC's top prize goes to 49ers-Seahawks winner

There will be plenty on the line Saturday night when the Seattle Seahawks meet the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, Calif.

Namely, the NFC West title, the conference's top playoff seed and a first-round playoff bye.

Both the Seahawks (13-3) and 49ers (12-4) carry six-game winning streaks into the matchup.

The 49ers have overcome season-ending injuries to defensive stalwarts Nick Bosa and Fred Warner to move into position to earn home-field advantage through the Super Bowl, which is scheduled for Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, with a victory.

"Back when Fred got hurt, if you told anybody we'd be 12-4 and be battling Week 18 for that one seed, you're absolutely crazy," 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk said. "Nobody would've believed you. So it's been a special season already, and one I definitely don't take for granted. But we're not done. I have all the confidence in the world that we can get this thing done."

The 49ers would get the No. 1 seed with a victory by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker because they won 17-13 at Seattle in the season opener. Brock Purdy threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to backup tight end Jake Tonges with 1:34 remaining and Bosa clinched the victory with a strip-sack of Sam Darnold with 36 seconds left and the Seahawks at San Francisco's 9-yard line.

The preparation time for both teams will be shorter than usual.

The Seahawks had to make a cross-country flight home after a 27-10 road victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Zach Charbonnet rushed for a season-high 110 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

The 49ers beat the visiting Chicago Bears 42-38 in a nationally televised game Sunday night as Purdy overcame a pick-6 on the opening play from scrimmage to throw for 303 yards and three touchdowns and rush for two more scores.

"I wish it wasn't (a short week). We just had a short week," said 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, referring to his team having played on Monday, Dec. 22, at Indianapolis. "So I really wish it would have been Sunday, but it is what it is. Hopefully the guys can heal up and be ready to go."

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald didn't seem concerned.

"Whatever," he said on Seattle Sports 710 AM. "When's the game? All right, let's go put together a plan. Let's go."

The short week could affect injured players and whether they can make it back.

Seahawks left tackle Charles Cross didn't play the past two games because of a hamstring injury and missed practice time this week, as did his backup Josh Jones (ankle/knee). Seattle signed rookie Amari Kight off the practice squad just in case.

Seattle safety Coby Bryant (knee) didn't practice on Wednesday. On the plus side, the Seahawks will get linebacker Derick Hall back after a one-game suspension.

San Francisco left tackle Trent Williams (hamstring) and defensive end Keion White (groin) missed practice on Wednesday. Juszczyk (hip), running back Christian McCaffrey (back), tight end George Kittle (ankle), wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee/ankle), defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee) and cornerback Upton Stout (concussion) were limited.

Kittle, asked if he would be ready to play Saturday, replied, "Absolutely."

The Seahawks can't afford another sluggish start, especially against a 49ers team that has scored 37 or more points in each of its past three games.

Seattle has scored an average of seven points before halftime over its past five games.

"We've had some games where we've started really great (and) we've had some games where we haven't and been able to rebound," Macdonald said. "I think it's hard to attribute it to just one thing. If not, I think we would have probably found a solution by now."

Joe Burrow argues for 'change' with Bengals in three-year playoff drought: 'What we've been doing hasn't worked'

NFL fans know Joe Burrow is a true franchise quarterback, one of the few elite players who can lift up an entire team and immediately make it a contender. Despite the presence of Burrow, however, the Cincinnati Bengals haven't made the playoffs in three seasons.

That's quite the feat, one that hasn't gone unnoticed by Burrow, whoadvocated for "change" within the organizationWednesday, per ESPN.

"We don't want to be in the spot we are in now, so something's got to change," Burrow said Wednesday. "Whether it's players we have continuing to improve and get better and play championship-caliber football or bringing in guys that will or whatever it may be. Obviously, something has to [change]."

It marks yet another eyebrow-raising comment by the 29-year-old Burrow over the past few weeks. With the Bengals in the midst of their worst season since 2020, Burrow has been vocal abouthis enjoyment of the gameandadmitted he's considered a futurewhere he's no longer a Bengal.

Burrow kept his "change" comments centered around players, saying either those currently on the team need to take a step forward or the organization needs to bring in championship-caliber talent to lift the team back into the playoffs.

While Burrow didn't mention coaching or front-office upheaval, there may be some Bengals fans who believe that could be the necessary "change" to push the Bengals back into contention. Under Zac Taylor, the Bengals have been criticized for their slow starts. While he was able to lead the team to a Super Bowl in his third season, the fact that Taylor has failed to take a Burrow-lead team to the playoffs in three straight years is a concern.

Burrow, however, isn't completely blameless in his team's failure to make the postseason the past three seasons. When healthy, Burrow is undoubtedly an elite quarterback. But various injuries have prevented him leading the Bengals to glory. Burrow missed seven games in 2023 due to a wrist issue and nine games this season with a toe injury. Both injuries essentially sunk the team's chances in those seasons.

Keeping Burrow healthy and upright would go a long way toward the Bengals returning to the Super Bowl in the next couple seasons. The team's front office was criticized for not doing enough last offseason to strengthen its offensive line. Those critiques were immediately validated after Burrow went down in Week 2 with his injury.

Because of that, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Burrow is advocating for change. If he can avoid taking big hits, Burrow has it in him to lead the Bengals to a championship. But if the Bengals continue to embrace the status quo — like they did last offseason — the remainder of Burrow's time in Cincinnati could end in bitter disappointment.

Gabon's government appears to have suspended national team and fired staff after poor Africa Cup

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Gabon's government appears to have suspended its national soccer team after a disappointing performance at the Africa Cup of Nations and fired its coaching staff.

Gabon failed to win a game at the ongoing tournament.

The country's interim sports minister, Simplice-Désiré Mamboula, reportedly made the announcement on national TV late Wednesday with no time frame on when Gabon would play again. He also said that the government had decided to remove players Pierre Émerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuélé Manga from the squad.

However, the video clip of Mamboula's declaration was later removed from the social media channels of Gabon Télévision, and no corresponding statement was published on the government website.

Aubameyang, the team captain, did not feature in Gabon'sfinal group game against Ivory Coaston Wednesday after returning to his club Marseille with an injury.

The Panthers were already assured of last place and elimination after losing their first two games to Cameroon and Mozambique.

Before Wednesday's final group game, Gabon's president, Brice Oligui Nguema, criticized the team for its performance in Morocco and blamed a "lack of method and the application of resources."

Nguema said there was "a worrying erosion of patriotic sentiment in the management of sporting affairs," according to broadcaster Gabon 24.

Nguema seized power in a2023 military coup.
