Jessica Simpson recalled a time when money was tighter.

In an interview with the Business of Fashion on Friday, Oct. 17, the All's Fair actress spoke about how her dad Joe Simpson's preacher salary impacted how she shopped growing up.

While discussing the affordability of her clothing, accessories and fragrances, Simpson, 45, spoke about how she learned how to shop.

"I'm a preacher's daughter. My dad made $30,000 a year. I know what it's like to go to discount stores and really search for something great," she said.

Simpson continued: "I knew if we made those great things for people, we would succeed."

"I love being the underdog," she said. "I love being the little engine, because I don't lose endurance and I haven't gotten to the top."

Added Simpson, "Yet. Because the reality is, I would not have a business if I'd gotten everything I wanted as a celebrity."

The "Leave" musician recently launched her latest fragrance Mystic Canyon, which she told PEOPLE embodied an "empowering" juncture in her life.

"Mystic Canyon is so nostalgic already because [new album] Nashville Canyon is so empowering," said Simpson of releasing her fragrance and latest album in tandem. "It's been such an empowering time of self-discovery as a woman. It just has a rooted feeling to it that is somewhat ... It feels like a memory."

According to the "Breadcrumbs" artist, the fragrance has a subtle, "universal" scent, which is goal for everything within the Jessica Simpson Collection. For her first launch in five years, Simpson included notes of purple plum, jasmine, vanilla bean and more.

"I don't want them to smell like me if they're up against me for the rest of the day," said Simpson of avoiding something smelling too strong. "Everything that we do, we make universal. I think this is the first fragrance that we have done that is truly universal."
