The band released a statement assuring that Arcade Fire will continue despite the breakup.

Chassagne previously supported Butler amid multiple accusations of sexual misconduct in 2022.

Two key members of Arcade Fire are ending their romantic relationship.

Frontman Win Butler and multi-instrumentalist Régine Chassagne announced that they are separating after 22 years of marriage via the band's official Instagram account on Thursday. The split comes three years after Chassagne publicly supported Butler when he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple people in 2022.

"After a long and loving marriage, Win & Régine have decided to separate," the band's post began. "They continue to love, admire and support each other as they co-parent their son."

The post also clarified that Arcade Fire will persist despite the couple's split. "Their work in Haiti with KANPE continues and their bond as creative soulmates will endure, as will Arcade Fire," the statement said. "The band send their love and look forward to seeing you all on tour soon."

Butler and Chassagne met while attending McGill University in Montreal in 2001, and began performing together in Arcade Fire shortly thereafter. They married in 2003, and both musicians stayed in the group after a lineup shakeup, sharing lead vocal duties on the band's 2004 debut album Funeral. That same year, they began their shared humanitarian work in Haiti, as Chassagne's parents both grew up in the country and fled during the dictatorship of François Duvalier. Chassagne co-founded KANPE alongside Dominique Anglade in 2010.

Four accusers claimed that Butler subjected them to inappropriate sexual interactions between 2016 and 2020 in a 2022 Pitchfork report. The accusers — three of whom are women and one of whom is gender-fluid — told the outlet that Butler allegedly kissed and touched them without their consent, with one accuser claiming that the singer sexually assaulted them twice.

Butler confirmed that he had extramarital affairs in a statement to Pitchfork but denied all allegations of misconduct, claiming that all of the encounters were consensual and that Chassagne was "aware" of his dalliances.

"While these relationships were all consensual, I am very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behavior," he said at the time. "I'm sorry for the pain I caused — I'm sorry I wasn't more aware and tuned in to the effect I have on people — I f---ed up, and while not an excuse, I will continue to look forward and heal what can be healed, and learn from past experiences. I can do better and I will do better."

Chassagne supported Butler at the time, offering a statement defending her then-husband from the accusations.

"I have stood by him because I know he is a good man who cares about this world, our band, his fans, friends, and our family," she wrote. "I've known Win since before we were 'famous,' when we were just ordinary college students. I know what is in his heart, and I know he has never, and would never, touch a woman without her consent and I am certain he never did. He has lost his way and he has found his way back. I love him and love the life we have created together."

In the years since the Pitchfork report, Arcade Fire has toured extensively and released a new studio album, Pink Elephant. During the tour for the band's previous album, We, singer Feist dropped out of the lineup as the opening act, citing the accusations against Butler as the reason for her departure.

"To stay on tour would symbolize I was either defending or ignoring the harm caused by Win Butler and to leave would imply I was the judge and jury," Feist said in an open letter in September 2022. "I can't solve that by quitting, and I can't solve it by staying. But I can't continue."

Beck also pulled out of the opening act slot for the North American leg of the same tour a month later, though he didn't provide specific reasons as to why he exited.
