A groom's sister-in-law wore her own wedding dress to his ceremony

One wedding guest recalled on Reddit hearing "a couple of gasps" and seeing people "shaking their heads"

"It takes a special kind of special to wear your wedding dress to someone else's wedding," the individual said

A bride and groom were in for a surprise when a woman showed up to their ceremony wearing her own wedding dress.

One of the guests recalled the shocking incident in a post on Reddit's "Wedding Shaming" forum. The individual, who had been best friends with the bride since high school, explained that when they arrived, they instantly "heard a couple of gasps" coming from the audience. Over on the groom's family's side of the church, his brother walked down the aisle accompanied by his new wife, who decided to wear her own wedding gown for the big day.

"Even at the age of 18, [I] thought she should not have been wearing white," the guest wrote.

They added, "Some of the women [were] shaking their heads."

Wearing white at someone else's wedding is considered rude in many Western cultures. This is because white is generally reserved for the bride, so a guest wearing that color may be perceived as attention-seeking or inappropriate.

According to the guest, it's one thing to break the social etiquette rule, but it's another to go as far as to wear a wedding dress.

"She wasn't just wearing a white dress, she was wearing her wedding dress from her wedding just a few months earlier," the bride's friend said, adding, "It takes a special kind of special to wear your wedding dress to someone else's wedding."

It was at the reception that the guest learned that the woman in white had tied the knot with one of the groom's brothers "just a few months" prior in a "casual backyard wedding." Although it wasn't a "big poofy meringue" ballgown, the dress not being fancy didn't make it any less white.

"Everyone on the groom's side clearly recognized it as her wedding dress," the poster wrote. "So did my friend, who was not amused."

In the comments section, Reddit users shamed the groom's sister-in-law for her choice of attire. They said if she really wanted to repurpose the dress, she could have "dyed it another color."

"I've heard of people doing this because they didn't want their expensive wedding dress to only be worn one time," one Redditor wrote with the face with rolling eyes emoji.

Another person said, "That just screams attention-seeking; so awkward for everyone else."
