It was a good night for Félix Auger-Aliassime, and a very bad one for Alexander Zverev.

The No. 3 seed of the US Open was bounced out of the tournament a little after 11 p.m. local time, falling 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round at Flushing Meadows. It was Auger-Aliassime's first career win over a top-5 player in a Grand Slam.

He certainly earned it, erasing an early deficit with a dominant performance that saw him notch 50 winners against 35 unforced errors.

Auger-Aliassime, who was once ranked as highly as No. 6 in the world before struggling over the past few years, saw the win as hard work paying off:

"This feels good. This feels good! I've been coming here since 2018. I'm still young but it's been a few years. I'm working my way.. some of you might be the first time you're watching me tonight. This feels really good. The job's not done. Tournament is still going. But this means a lot to me. A lot of hard work. Many years of it."

The loss leaves Zverev still in search of his first career Grand Slam title, despite titles in 24 other tournaments and the fifth spot on the ATP's all-time career earnings list. He showed decent form with semifinal finishes in the Cincinnati Open and Canadian Open leading into the tournament, but wound up facing a capable opponent who showed a level few expected.

Auger-Aliassime particularly dominated at the net, winning 24-of-27 points there against the counter-punching Zverev. His reward will be a date with No. 15 seed Andrey Rublev on Monday, with a chance at his first major quarterfinal since 2022.
