Bluebird’s back at Coniston, but on a go slow

The Telegraph

Almost 60 years ago,Donald Campbellwas killed on Coniston Water as he raced to break 300mph.

Now the hydroplane used in that record attempt is returning to the crash site, for the first time since it somersaulted and sank on Jan 4, 1967.

Bluebird, which set four water-speed records before the crash, will race across the lake again this week. But this time it will only be allowed to reach speeds of 150mph.

Some 20,000 spectators are expected to visit the lake each day during the six-day Bluebird K7 Festival, hoping for a glimpse of the Bluebird flying across the water.

It will be piloted by Australian Dave Warby, who is himself a world water-speed record challenger and the son of the current record holder, the late Ken Warby.

The Bluebird on the Isle of Bute at Loch Fad in 2018

The jet-powered hydroplane’s design means it glides on top of the water at high speeds, only touching the surface at three points so as to reduce drag that would slow it down.

Ken’s record of 317.6mph was set in 1978 in his boat, the Spirit of Australia, which he built himself. The mark still stands almost 50 years later, but son Dave is hoping to replicate his father’s achievements, albeit not in the Bluebird.

Dave, 58, has spent the last decade leading a motorsport team to design and build the Spirit of Australia II, focusing on safety measures and slowly increasing the speed of the craft through testing.

The boat has a theoretical top speed of 370mph and is powered by a Rolls-Royce engine.

However, this week, Dave will have to be satisfied with tamer speeds of around 150mph, implemented for safety reasons.

In 1967, Campbell had been attempting to set a new world record on water of more than 300mph when he crashed.

The Bluebird, piloted by Donald Campbell, somersaulted and sank on Jan 4, 1967

Its wreckage and his body were left on the lake bed for decades before being pulled out in 2001 byBill Smith, a Tyneside engineer, who enlisted a group of volunteers to restore it. Ultimately, around 50 per cent of the original craft was lost and had to be replaced.

Alengthy ownership battleensued after Mr Smith claimed part-ownership because of the work he and his Bluebird Project team had carried out.

He relinquished his claim and the vessel returned to Coniston in March 2024 and was installed at the Ruskin Museum.

Gina Campbell, the daughter of Donald, said her father “would be delighted and pleased” by this week’s festival.

“I have no doubt that Bluebird K7 will lift up her skirts and perform for the public,” she said.

For the festival, the craft has been given special dispensation to exceed the lake’s 10mph speed limit in place since the 1970s.

For a record to be achieved, the craft will have to go a kilometre out into the water and then back through speed traps, with the average speed used to calculate the record.

Campbell, who reached 315mph on the way out, recorded an average speed of 297.6mph.

Donald Campbell was 45 when he died in the crash

On the return journey, with his own record already seemingly torn up, Campbell continued to fight to beat the 300mph, but crashed as he reached 328mph.

After his body was recovered and buried in a local cemetery, an inquest in 2002 recorded a verdict of accidental death. The coroner concluded it was likely that Bluebird was unbalanced by factors, including the speed of travel and rough water.

Since its reconstruction, the Bluebird has had one outing, at Loch Fad in Scotland in 2018.

Even now, despite the festival running between May 11 and 17, there’s a possibility the craft won’t ever take to the water.

Poor weather will make a run across the water too dangerous, and while rain is forecast across the week, it is the predicted wind that is understood to be the main concern.

As well as making for choppier waters, the wind can unsettle the balance of the craft and increase headwinds, ultimately causing it to flip.

Organisers were constrained on dates to hold the event after the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) demanded it take place during term-time to minimise the number of tourists.

The Bluebird K3, which set three world water-speed records when it was piloted by Campbell’s father, Sir Malcolm Campbell, in the 1930s, will also be running.

Sir Malcolm Campbell and his mechanics with the Bluebird for an attempt to set a record on the waters of Lake Locarno

Jeff Carroll, the chair of the Ruskin Museum’s trustees, told a LDNPA committee meeting last year that the Bluebird K7 represented the UK’s post-war “engineering prowess”.

He said it was “a possibly one-time-only event to inspire a new generation” and that “Campbell’s death was a day that shook the world”.

“Four of Bluebird’s seven world water-speed records were set on Coniston Water. That would have been five had fate not intervened.”

The two-time Grammy nominee made an appearanceon the “Call Her Daddy” podcastthis week, where she shared that she’s “mostly celibate,” with one small caveat.

“I’m celibate, except for when I’m in Italy,” she said.

When host Alex Cooper pressed for more details, Kesha clarified that she didn’t require a partner to be present.

“Now I actually masturbate to gratitude meditations,” she said. “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Remember when I said I started every day with a gratitude meditation? Right.”

Kesha made the surprising admission while discussing the ways she’s “reclaimed” her sexuality following a nearlydecade-long legal battlewith former producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, whom she accused of ****** assault and battery.

Both partiesagreed to a resolutionwith undisclosed terms in June 2023, shortly before Dr. Luke’s countersuit alleging defamation was set to go to trial.

In her chat with Cooper, Kesha said she’s been using her downtime to “reprogram” herself and embrace personal “pleasure” in more ways than one.

“It is OK as a woman to feel pleasure in this world when you go through things,” she said. “Pleasure is not like the No. 1 neural pathway that your brain always goes to when you have survived things. And I had to reprogram that, and I do it every ******* day, and I’m not even embarrassed about it.”

She also emphasized that her celibacy is intentional, noting that she was holding out for a “king.”

“My ***** is manifesting with gratitude that my king is coming, OK?” she quipped. “Because your body has to align with your reality before it shows up in your life.”

Kesha is among a growing list of celebrities who have spoken frankly about their celibacy. Others include fellowmusician Lenny Kravitz, who in 2024 said he hadn’t had *** in nine years, andactor Julia Fox, who has cited the Supreme Court’s 2022 rollback of abortion rights as her motivation to abstain.

Shane van Gisbergen angling for 7th road-course title at Watkins Glen

Shane van Gisbergen has work to do in the Finger Lakes region of New York this weekend when the NASCAR Cup Series holds its second race on a road course in 2026, venturing to Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Field Level Media

On his 37th birthday Saturday, he led a strong, three-car showing by Trackhouse Racing in qualifying.

He put his No. 97 Chevrolet up front -- his fifth career pole -- by turning a lap of 1:11.165 seconds (123.937 mph) to knock off Michael McDowell's No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevy (1:11.424/123.488). Austin Cindric No. 2 Ford was third.

Trackhouse teammates Ross Chastain and rookie Connor Zilisch rounded out the top five.

Nicknamed SVG for the sake of all the NASCAR announcers and fans who discuss his incredible work with the pedals on the snaking layouts, van Gisbergen finds himself riding 19th in the standings, winless as he turns left and right for Trackhouse Racing.

It's the preponderance of right turns that have led to his success since he exploded onto the Cup scene with his stunning win at the Chicago Street Course on July 2, 2023.

The race ended with the lamp posts glowing alongside Michigan Avenue, nearly in darkness, and while van Gisbergen has not really been in the dark this season, the results have not been illuminating.

A native of Auckland, New Zealand, SVG would love nothing more than to repeat at the Glen and leap over a number of fellow winless drivers in the standings.

But it won't be gifted to him.

In 2025, driving the No. 88, used this season by his teammate and rookie road-course ace Zilisch, van Gisbergen beat Chris Buescher to win the Cup race in August. The day before, Zilisch wrecked SVG and earned the checkers in the then-Xfinity Series race.

However, the 19-year-old Zilisch caught his foot in the window netting as he climbed from his car in Victory Lane and crashed hard to the ground, breaking his collarbone and requiring surgery but returned 13 days later at Daytona.

van Gisbergen, whose six Cup victories have all come on road courses, warned this week that more danger awaits in upstate New York, referring to a new barrier installed in Turn 5 at the famous Carousel.

"The way that wall is angled, it's going to grab cars and spit them out back into the middle of the track," said van Gisbergen, who is entered in all three series' races this weekend. "This setup, especially how close it gets to the racing line, feels like a trap."

In the season's only road-course race so far at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, he tried to chase down and pass leader Tyler Reddick but could not do it, only leading two laps while Reddick paced the way on 58 circuits en route to his third straight win to start 2026.

van Gisbergen has posted only one other finish inside the top 10: a sixth at Atlanta the week before.

Not much has gone well in the last four races for him since running 11th at Martinsville last month: He has not finished better than his 17th-place effort last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, where Chase Elliott took the checkers.

SVG (+125) and his teenaged teammate Zilisch (+285) come in as heavy favorites, according to DraftKings. Combined, they create a gap between third-favorite Reddick (+750) that's as large as the distance from Watkins Glen to the Big Apple.

"I thought I was being pretty normal when I fell off my car, but clearly my normal is a little bit different," said Zilisch, who also won the Xfinity race in 2024 at the 2.45-mile course. "I don't think I'll be too flashy, unless I win on Sunday."

There's a pretty decent chance that Trackhouse will be represented in the Glen's Victory Lane.

Jordan Mailata praises new Eagles offensive line coach Chris Kuper

ThePhiladelphia Eaglesknew replacing Jeff Stoutland would never be simple. Honestly, there probably isn’t a 'simple' way to replace someone many view as one of the greatest offensive line coaches in modern football. The legend spent thirteen seasons with the organization and enjoyed multiple Super Bowl appearances. He helped mold countless success stories. One of his greatest accomplishments has to be transforming an Australian rugby player who never played American football into an All-Pro. Jordan Mailata's story seems to get better each time we tell it.

USA TODAY

Coach Stout, as he's affectionately called, is practically football royalty in Philadelphia. That's why all eyes immediately shifted toward Chris Kuper the moment he inherited the job. Apparently, the early reviews inside the locker room are encouraging, even though the shadow cast by Jeff Stoutland is already enormous.

Jordan Mailata already approves of Chris Kuper

Few voices inside theEaglesorganization carry more weight than Jordan Mailata. He's not just Philadelphia's franchise left tackle. He’s also living proof of what elite offensive line development looks like. From a rugby player with almost no football experience to one of the NFL's premier blindside protectors, Mailata became one of Stoutland's greatest success stories, so when he speaks about offensive line coaching, people tend to listen.

Recently, during an appearance on 94 WIP-FM, Mailata offered strong praise for Kuper while also refusing to play the comparison game everyone else keeps trying to play.

“I don’t draw comparisons.”

Honestly, that answer probably says everything Eagles fans needed to hear. Let's be real here. Kuper was always walking into one of the toughest position-coaching follow-ups imaginable. Fair or unfair, comparisons to Stoutland were inevitable from the moment the hire became official. Mailata clearly understands that, and just as clearly, he wants no part of fueling it. That's leadership. That's classic Jordan Mailata.

Chris Kuper may never fully escape the shadow of Jeff Stoutland, but if the respect he’s already earning from leaders like Jordan Mailata is any indication, he’s off to exactly the kind of start the Eagles were hoping for. If he is successful in developing the youngsters, like Markel Bell and Micah Morris, his reputation and resume will write themselves.
