VJ Edgecombe didn't waste any time with his NBA debut.
Edgecombe made history in the Philadelphia 76ers' season-opener against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. The former Baylor star dropped 14 points in the first 12 minutes of that matchup at TD Garden, breaking a record that LeBron James set more than two decades ago in his debut.
Edgecombe has now scored the most points in the first quarter of an NBA debut in league history. James, when he was playing in his first season with the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2003, had 12 points in the opening period of his debut.
It took Edgecombe a few minutes to get going, too, which makes his feat that much more impressive. The 20-year-old made a single free throw in the first few minutes of the game, but didn't hit his first field goal until right around the midway point of the period when he threw down a dunk.

That seemed to spark something in him. He scored the team's next eight points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and sinking another dunk, to get to double digits not even two minutes after his first field goal. He then hit a huge 3-pointer late in the quarter to tie the game up and officially break James' record.

By the end of the quarter, Edgecombe had gone 5-of-9 from the field with three 3-pointers.
Edgecombe averaged 15 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last season while shooting 34% from behind the arc at Baylor. He earned All-Big 12 honors in his one season with the Bears while leading them to a 24-11 record and the second round of the NCAA tournament. The 76ers then selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA Draft earlier this summer.
Though Edgecombe has a long way to live up to the Hall of Fame-caliber career that James is still in the midst of, he's already surpassed one of his milestones. That's a strong start.
