President Trump on Tuesday addressed the United Nations General Assembly, questioning the purpose of the organization and rebuking allies as he outlined his "America First" agenda.
Trump touted his role in ending seven global conflicts and railed against member countries over what he described as unchecked migration.
"When your prisons are filled with so-called asylum-seekers … it's time to end the failed experiment of open borders," Trump said. "You have to end it now. I can tell you. I'm really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell."
On Tuesday afternoon, Trump met with U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as leaders from Argentina and the European Union. He also plans to hold a multilateral meeting with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
Back in Washington, Congress is staring down an Oct. 1 shutdown deadline. Earlier Tuesday, Trump canceled a White House meeting set for later this week with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) over funding negotiations. Jeffries said Trump "chickened out," as he announced Democrats would return early from recess.
