A GIANT collection of hard-to-find vehicles sold at auction for thousands of dollars less than their anticipated market value.

The classic cars made their way under the hammer after an iconic vehicle museum shuttered following its owner's death.

The Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California, officially closed down in February 2024 after its owner, the businessman and philanthropist Peter Mullin, died in September.

Mullin, a proponent of Roman Catholic charities, local universities, and automotive history, collected nearly 150 early 20th-century French vehicles in the museum.

The Mullin Automotive Museum was like stepping into a time machine for cars.

The cars spanned dozens of classes, from standard passenger vehicles to luxury sports cars.

Multi-million-dollar Bugatti hypercars sat next to entry-level 1940s Citroën models.

The museum was dedicated to educating audiences on the swooping art-deco designs of 20th-century French automotive engineering.

The museum's showroom also displayed cars in differing states of repair: dozens were ready for the road, while others awaited restoration as ongoing projects.

However, the collection was world-renowned for its selectiveness.

It was considered "one of the world's greatest car museums" by The Autopian.

But when Mullins passed at 82, his wife, Merle, announced the museum would shutter.

"Sharing these 'rolling sculptures' and beautiful art with others was Peter's truest passion, and the museum helped bring that vision to life," she said in a statement.

"We are deeply indebted to our staff, docents, volunteers, visitors and supporters who have dedicated their time and passion over the past 13 years."

DECADE-OLD DEALS

Several vehicles have already transferred ownership.

A 1960 Citroën ID19 – renowned during its production period as a low-cost tech maven – was one of the cars sold from the museum lot.

The car featured Citroën's iconic hydropneumatic suspension system, providing a smooth and comfortable ride.

It was available in various body styles, including sedans, wagons, and convertibles.

The company sold dozens of copies of the car after it gained popularity for its distinctive appearance and advanced technology.

The ID19 from Mullin's collection had an estimated value of around $4,000-$6,000.

But the car transferred ownership after someone put up $650.

Mullin initially purchased the vehicle nine years ago.

The auction shut down on April 25 after the museum's owners sold dozens of cars.
