A DRIVER said he has been hit with over $2,000 in parking fees for a vehicle he no longer owns.

Vincent Federico, from Schoharie County, around 40 miles west of Albany, New York, said he received parking violations from a city he had never driven into.

Federico said he had been mailed several New York City parking fines, according to CW affiliate WPIX.

The driver said he sold his vehicle in October 2022 to someone in Garfield, New Jersey, 15 miles west of New York City.

He later purchased a new vehicle but complained that he had received a violation on the old car just weeks after selling it.

Federico received four tickets in one day through the mail.

He worried about the impact these parking fines could have on him.

"I can have my license suspended and my registration privileges suspended for something that I didn't even do," he said.

He said the fines added up to over $2,000 by March 2023.

The driver even recalled how the situation had made him feel emotionally.

"Helpless, total frustration," Federico said.

"It's really starting to affect my daily life."

Federico claimed he had followed the steps required when he sold his vehicle.

"I turned in the license plates," he said.

"I've done everything that I was supposed to do by the State of New York."

A spokesperson for the NYC Department of Finance gave a possible explanation for the incident to WPIX.

You can avoid being ticketed by following all posted laws and ordinances, but sometimes mistakes are made

They added an inspection into the case had not yet been completed, at the time.

"We are investigating this matter, but a situation like this may result from a previous owner neglecting to remove the registration sticker when selling the vehicle," the spokesperson said.

"Traffic enforcement agents and police officers rely on registration stickers to issue parking tickets."

It is unclear what the outcome of the investigation was and whether the fines were upheld.

The U.S. Sun has reached out to the NYC Department of Finance for comment.
