Audi team boss Jonathan Wheatley leaves 2 races into F1 season after reported Aston Martin interest

HINWIL, Switzerland (AP) — Team principal Jonathan Wheatley has left the AudiFormula 1team just two races into its rebranding from Sauber, following reportsAston Martinwas seeking to sign him as it tries to turn around a troubled season.

Audi said Friday that Wheatley, who took charge ofwhat was then the Sauber teamin April 2025, was leaving "with immediate effect for personal reasons," and suggested there's more change to come.

Mattia Binotto, a former Ferrari and Sauber team principal who was in charge of the transformation into the Audi works team, including building its own engines, will now replace Wheatley as well ahead of next week's Japanese Grand Prix.

"The team's future structure will be fully defined at a later stage, as the organization continues to adapt to the evolving environment of Formula One," Audi said in a statement.

The announcement came a day after media outlets, including the BBC, reported that Aston Martin had approached Wheatley about a potential move.

Any move to Aston Martin would reunite Wheatley with former colleague Adrian Newey, the Formula 1 car-design great who took on team principal duties in what's been a woeful start to 2026 for the team.

Newey and Wheatley previously worked together at Red Bull when it was F1's dominant team.

Aston Martin owner and executive chairman Lawrence Stroll issued a statement Friday which didn't name Wheatley but expressed confidence in Newey in his role as "managing technical partner", and said the team doesn't follow "the traditional team principal role that you see elsewhere."

Stroll added: "We are regularly approached by senior executives of other teams who wish to join Aston Martin Aramco, but in keeping with our policy, we do not comment on rumor or speculation."

Aston Martin has lacked pace at the start of a new engine partnership with Honda and struggled with vibrations which damage the car's battery and affect the drivers.

Fernando Alonso retired from last week's Chinese Grand Prix because of "discomfort" caused by the vibrations, the team said, and Newey previously warned of the risk ofnerve damage.

Audi has had reliability issues of its own with two failures to start races, but showed stronger pace with a ninth-place finish for Gabriel Bortoleto at the season-openingAustralian Grand Prix.

U.S. Soccer narrowed its coaching pay gap — then hired Mauricio Pochettino

A few years ago, the U.S. Soccer Federation made a concerted effort to close the pay gap between the men's and women's national team coaches. Though the global scales remain far apart, the women's unprecedented success made the case for greater balance.

Yahoo Sports

Emma Hayes' hiring before the 2024 Olympics fulfilled that goal, putting her in the neighborhood of Gregg Berhalter's contract.

But when Berhalter was fired that summer and the USSF urgently turned to a high-profile coach for the2026 World Cupon home ground, the salary proportions reverted.

Draft your Yahoo Fantasy Baseball team for the 2026 MLB Season

According to theUSSF's most recent tax filing, posted this week, Mauricio Pochettino is making almost six times more than Hayes. Because both were hired months into 2024, the tax data does not show their salaries. Annualized, though, the numbers come out to $6,040,600 in base salary for Pochettino and $1,116,835 for Hayes.

Pochettino, whose contract runs through this summer's World Cup, is reportedly thethird-highest paid men's national team coach, behind England's Thomas Tuchel and Brazil's Carlo Ancelotti.

Not all the money covering Pochettino's salary is coming from the USSF's coffers, however. Hedge-fund billionaire Ken Griffin and other individuals and sponsors are helping bankroll the contract, though specific amounts have not been disclosed.

Hayes, whose deal runs through the 2027 World Cup, is believed to be the highest-paid women's national team coach in the sport. She earns more than twice her predecessor, Vlatko Andonovski.

Because of Berhalter's firing and Pochettino's hiring, the non-profit USSF spent almost $7 million on men's head coaches in 2024.

Per the tax filing, Berhalter received almost $700,000 in base salary, $325,000 in unspecified "bonus and incentive compensation," plus about $750,000 in what's believed to be severance after being fired with two years left on his contract.

In his first national team job after guiding clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, Pochettino made about $2.5 million in U.S. base salary for five months' work and received another $2.5 million in "bonus and incentive compensation" (believed to be a signing bonus).

Hayes made almost $750,000 in eight months of base salary, plus $725,000 in combined bonuses, incentives and other compensation. Within three months of taking the helm, Hayes guided the U.S. to the Olympic gold medal in Paris.

Twila Kilgore, interim head coach before Hayes' arrival and Olympic assistant, made almost $500,000 overall.

Proportionally, the Pochettino-Hayes gap is not the largest in USSF history: About 10 years ago, Jurgen Klinsmann made about 10 times more than Jill Ellis, who ended up winning two World Cup trophies.

The U.S. Olympic women's team also made out well for its success and other annual benchmarks. Per tax data, they took home about $900,000 apiece in 2024.

USSF sporting director Matt Crocker, who was hired in April 2023, and CEO JT Batson made $659,000 each in base salary and $1.017 million and $917,000 overall, respectively. David Wright, the chief commercial officer, received $469,000 base and $883,000 overall.

Liverpool condemns 'dehumanising, cowardly' racist abuse of Ibrahima Konate

Liverpooldefender Ibrahima Konate was the target of "vile and abhorrent" racist abuse online, the Premier League club said Friday.

Associated Press

Konate was targeted after Wednesday'sChampions League victory against Galatasaraywhen he was involved in an incident that led to opposition striker Victor Osimhen sustaining a fractured arm.

Liverpool condemned the abuse as "dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate." It called on social media companies to do more to stamp it out.

"Our players are not targets. They are human beings. The abuse that continues to be directed at players, often hidden behind anonymous accounts, is a stain on the game and on the platforms that allow it to persist," the club said in a statement.

Liverpool said social media companies had the power and technology to prevent abuse.

"Allowing racist hatred to spread unchecked is a choice – and it is one that continues to harm players, families and communities across the game."

Liverpool said it was supporting Konate and working with authorities to try to identify those responsible for the abuse.

Last monthfour Premier League players were targetedwith racist abuse online over the same weekend.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri and Wolverhampton striker Tolu Arokodare shared images of messages they were sent on Instagram. Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle was also subjected to "vile online racist abuse,"his club said in a statement.

Kick It Out, a British-based anti-discrimination charity, repeated its calls for platforms to do more to address the problem that persists in elite soccer.

At the last Women's European Championship, England defender Jess Carter revealed she had been subject to racial abuse online.

"The current situation cannot be allowed to continue. It must be confronted, challenged and eradicated – not tomorrow, but now," Liverpool said.

DEA names Colombian president 'priority target' as US prosecutors probe ties to drug traffickers

NEW YORK (AP) — Colombian PresidentGustavo Petrohas been designated a "priority target" by theU.S. Drug Enforcement Administrationas federal prosecutors in New York probe his alleged ties to drug traffickers, according to people familiar with the matter and records seen by The Associated Press.

Colombia Election

DEA records show Petro has surfaced in multiple investigations dating to 2022, many based on interviews with confidential informants. The alleged crimes the DEA has investigated include his possible dealings withMexico's Sinaloa cartel, a scheme to leveragehis "total peace" planto benefit prominent traffickers who contributed to his presidential campaign. The records also suggest the use of law enforcement to smuggle cocaine and fentanyl through Colombian ports.

The "priority target" label is reserved for suspects DEA deems to have a "significant impact" on the drug trade.

An inquiry in early stages

In recent months, prosecutors in Brooklyn and Manhattan have been questioning drug traffickers about their ties to Petro and specifically about allegations the Colombian president's representatives solicited bribes to block their extradition to the United States, according to a person with knowledge of the inquiry who wasn't authorized to discuss the ongoing inquiry and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The person said it wasn't clear whether federal prosecutors have implicated Petro in any crime.

The investigation is focusing at least in part on allegations that representatives of Petro solicited bribes from drug traffickers at the Colombian jail La Picota in exchange for a promise that they not be extradited to the U.S., one of the people said.

A spokesperson for the Colombian presidency declined to comment on the ongoing investigations into Petro or the subsequent legal proceedings.

U.S. federal prosecutors declined to comment. The DEA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Petro has consistently denied allegations of drug trafficking, particularly after Trump labeled him an "illegal drug leader" and the Treasury Departmentsanctioned him in late 2025for alleged ties to the trade without offering evidence. Petro maintains that, while his administration aggressively targets major cartels, it remains focused on a more lenient, social-based approach for peasant farmers who cultivatecoca leaf.

The federal inquiry was reported earlier Friday by The New York Times.

Petro came under scrutiny through the course of drug trafficking investigations by New York authorities that led them to identify him as a subject, according to another person familiar with the matter.

The inquiries into Petro are in the early stages, and it is not clear whether they will result in charges, this person said, adding the White House has had no role in the investigations.

Family members under scrutiny

Petro, a former rebel leader, soared into office promising to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels and reallocate state resources to addressing entrenched poverty.

A leftist politician known for winding sometimes incoherent speeches, he has regularly criticized the Trump administration over its support for Israel, bombing ofdrug boats in the Caribbeanand likened the White House migration crackdown to "Nazi" tactics.

After one such outburst, at a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, Trump retaliated byrevoking Petro's U.S. visa. He also briefly slapped high tariffs on Colombia over Petro's refusal to acceptdeportation flights from the United States.

But more recently the two have shown signs of getting along. After a meeting at the White House in February,Trump described Petro as "terrific."

Colombian authorities have for years been investigating members of Petro's family for possible criminal acts.

His son, Nicolás Petro, was charged in 2023 with soliciting illegal campaign contributionsfrom a convicted drug trafficker to fund a lavish lifestyle of expensive cars and homes. The younger Petro has pleaded not guilty and his father has said none of the money was used to fund his campaign.

The president's brother, Juan Fernando Petro, has also been implicated in secret negotiations that allegedly took place with imprisoned drug traffickers to shield them from extradition to the U.S. in exchange for their disarmament.

Politics and cocaine

Politics in Colombia have long been tainted by cocaine, of which it is the world's largest supplier. In the 1980s,drug lord Pablo Escobarwas elected to the country's Congress with the support of one of Colombia's most traditional parties. A decade later, his rivals from the Cali cartel flooded the presidential campaign of Ernesto Samper with illegal donations.

The now defunct urban guerrilla group Petro belonged to, the 19th of April Movement, has long been suspected of taking money from Escobar's Medellin cartels as part of its deadly siege of the Supreme Court in 1985. Petro did not participate in the attack, which left several guerrillas and around half the high court's magistrates dead. Leaders of the group have always denied any links to the cartel.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle could make 3 landfalls, forecast says

On the other side of the world, atropical cyclonechurning through Australia has made landfall as a Category 4 storm and could make up to two more landfalls as the storm progresses through the weekend.

USA TODAY

Tropical Cyclone Narelle made landfall the morning of March 20 as a Category 4 storm, moving over land in Far North Queensland in remote parts of Australia, according to the country's Bureau of Meteorology.

(To clarify, hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all the same type of storm, known collectively as tropical cyclones. They have different names depending on what part of the world they form in.)

Since making landfall, the storm brought severe rainfall to the region as it tracked west, most recently located over the Gulf of Carpentaria. It has weakened to a Category 2 tropical cyclone, but is expected to undergo a period of reintensification as it prepares to make landfall again, forecasters said.

Narelle is the strongest tropical cyclone to strike Queensland since 2014, AccuWeather reported.

"There is a lot of rain in this system, and as it moves it will be hard and fast," Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said during a news conference.

Though this storm will have no impact on the United States, it's a reminder that theNorth Atlantic hurricane season will soon approach. The North Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November.

More:Storms around the world remind us that Atlantic hurricane season is coming. What will it bring?

Tropical Cyclone Narelle will keep impacting Australia for days

The night of March 20 local time, Narelle was a Category 2 storm with wind speeds of about 60 mph, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

When it made its first landfall, Narelle brought destructive winds up to 120 mph, along with heavy rain and power outages to the northeast coast as authorities warned people to stay indoors. There were some early reports of structural damage and downed trees.

Narelle was moving west at about 11 mph. It is expected to make a second landfall on the eastern Northern Territory the night of March 21 or early morning of March 22 as a Category 3 storm. It will continue its track west, potentially weakening to a tropical low as it moves across the Top End region on March 22 and March 23. Redevelopment into a tropical cyclone is expected next week, and depending on the storm's path, a third landfall is possible, AccuWeather reported.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle is impacting northern Australia on March 20 after making landfall as a Category 4 storm. Weakened to a Category 2, Narelle could undergo restrengthening and make up to two more landfalls, forecasters have said.

Across the Northern Territory on March 21, "very destructive winds" are expected in coastal areas between Birany Birany and Numbulwar, the bureau said. Heavy rain and flash flooding are also a risk.

How rare is this cyclone?

If Narelle follows its expected path, it would be just the third tropical cyclone since 1980, and the fourth since 1970, to make landfall in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, AccuWeather Lead International Forecaster Jason Nicholls said.

Australia's tropical cyclone season runs from Nov. 1 to April 30, Nicholls said. Rarely, cyclones can develop outside that period.

"In a typical year, the Australian region sees about 10 to 11 tropical cyclones, and roughly 3 to 4 of them make landfall or cross the Australian coast," Nicholls said.

Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones definitions

Hurricanes form in the Atlantic basin, along with the eastern and central Pacific basins. Typhoons form in the western Pacific, while cyclones (aka tropical cyclones) form in the Indian Ocean and in the South Pacific.

Unlike the North Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through November, the South Indian Ocean cyclone season typically runs from November through April, similar to the Southern Hemisphere cyclone seasons near Australia.

  • Norris, a legendary action star, famously starred in hits including An Eye for an Eye and the TV series Walker, Texas Ranger

Chuck Norrishas died at the age of 86.

Norris first found fame in karate films of the 1980s, includingA Force of OneandAn Eye for an Eye. By the end of the decade, he was established as one of Hollywood's biggest action stars. He starred in the TV seriesWalker, Texas Ranger, which premiered in 1993.

The actor's family confirmed his death via a statement released on hisInstagramFriday, March 20.

"It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning," the statement read. "While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.""To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family.""He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives," it concluded.

The actor, who turned 86 earlier this month, was hospitalized in Hawaii on Thursday, March 19,TMZpreviously reported. This came just days after Norris celebrated his birthday with an Instagram post of himself boxing and training on March 10.

Norris was born Carlos Ray Norris in Ryan, Okla. in 1940. His mother was Irish and his father, he said, was Cherokee. In his 1988 memoirThe Secret of Inner Strength: My Story, Norris opened up about his father's alcoholism and how it affected his childhood and adolescence." It wasn't until my dad came home from WW II that he really started to drink,"Norris told PEOPLEin 1988. But at his worst, he would leave the family for months at a time, then return to wreak havoc.

"His absences were actually pleasant times," Norris explained. "My mom was working — just menial jobs, since she had only a ninth-grade education — but there was none of the tension, the tippy-toeing around, like there is when there is someone in the house who's liable to blow up at any moment." The family also moved around a lot, which Norris felt kept him from making lasting connections.

"The biggest problem I had was poor self-image, which was probably the main cause of my shyness. I was always afraid of saying the wrong thing, so I wouldn't speak much," he explained.

After graduating from high school, Norris joined the Air Force, and while stationed in Korea he learned karate. He wasn't good at first, telling PEOPLE in 1980, "Nothing comes easily to me." But he stuck with long, daily workouts because "for the first time, I wanted to make something of my life."

When he returned from the Air Force, he worked a side gig as a karate teacher. "When I came back to the States, some GIs asked me to teach them, so I arranged to give a demonstration and a talk," he said in 1988. As he began to speak, he panicked but kept going. "It was the first time I forced myself to crack that egg of insecurity I'd carried all through my life. And from then on, I kept forcing myself to go a little further, until I had completely overcome it."

He also competed in the sport and won consecutive middleweight titles in 1968. His classes became popular with celebrities, including Bob Barker and Marie Osmond. One of his students,Steve McQueen, encouraged him to get into movies.

After Norris metBruce Leeat a competition, they became friends. The legendary martial artist cast Norris in his 1972 filmWay of the Dragon. The film grossed an estimated $130 million worldwide and set Norris on his path to stardom.

Though almost all his movies were R-rated, he told PEOPLE in 1985 that he didn't think they were actually that violent. "The buildup makes it look like more. I do violence in a self-defense way," he said. He also did less and less martial arts in every film, aiming to expand the audience. They also avoided sex, drugs and alcohol, as Norris wanted his heroes to be an example to young people.

He starred in 1984'sMissing in Actionand 1985'sCode of Silence, a crime drama that he hoped would establish himself not just as an action star but an actor. "I've worked so hard to get rid of that karate image," he said in 1985. More films for Norris includedFirewalker,The Hitman,Sidekicks,Hellbound,Top DogandForest Warrior.

Walker, Texas Rangerpremiered on CBS in 1993, with Norris starring as the title hero. It ultimately ran for eight seasons, but had early trouble. Ten days before it was set to premiere, Cannon Television, the studio that produced it, shut down after filming three episodes. When those episodes found strong ratings, CBS stepped in to produce it. Though the show aired on Saturday nights, by 1996 it was a Top 10 show.

"I've finally gotten the show to where I want it, and that's to a place where you really don't know what to expect each Saturday," Norris told theLos Angeles Timesin 1996. "One week we might have an episode about the peer pressure on kids to become involved in street gang violence, and the next week is something that is fairly silly and humorous, and the next is a race-against-time type drama with Walker trying to rescue a child that is trapped in a well."

He added, "There's heart and it's emotional and gripping," saying that he thought it took a few years for people to stop thinking of him as just an action movie guy. The series ended in 2001, but he also reprised the role in the 2005 TV movieWalker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire.

Later roles for Norris includedBells of Innocence,DodgeBall: A True Underdog StoryandThe Expendables 2.

In 2005, Norris found new fans thanks to the Internet meme "Chuck Norris facts," where people would spread hyperbolic facts about the actor. The meme was started by Ian Spector in 2005. Spector toldESPNin 2023 that he met Norris soon after the meme became popular and got his blessing to continue. Norris said his favorite fake fact was, "They wanted to put Chuck Norris' face on Mount Rushmore. But the granite wasn't hard enough for his beard."

Norris established the United Fighting Arts Federation and Kickstart Kids in 1990, hoping to use martial arts to keep kids away from drugs. He also worked as a spokesperson for the U.S. Veterans Administration. A longtime Republican, he endorsed Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Norris married Dianne Kay Holechek, his high school classmate, in 1958. They shared sons Mike and Eric. He also welcomed a daughter, Dina, in 1963 during an extramarital affair; he did not meet her until decades later. Norris and Holechek divorced in 1989.

In 1998, he married Gena O'Kelley, who was 23 years his junior. They met on the set ofWalker, Texas Ranger. "I remember thinking, 'Oh, my gosh! She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen,' he told PEOPLE in 1999. "I finally got the courage to ask her out, and we definitely connected." Norris welcomed twins Dakota and Danilee together in 2001.

Norris is survived by his wife and children.

TheFoo Fightersfrontman andNirvanadrummer, 57, toldThe Guardianthat he is currently attending "therapy six days a week" and has been for the last "70 weeks." He added, "I did the math the other day: over 430 sessions."

The experience has taught him to be more communicative "not only with others, but with myself," Grohl said. He also acknowledged that "there were so many things that led me to this therapy," not just his infidelity.

Still, when asked about his extramarital affair, the "Monkey Wrench" singer explained that the lyrics on the band's upcoming 12th studio album,Your Favorite Toy, say everything he wants to about the situation.

"I have to be perfectly honest. Writing songs and writing lyrics about these things is sometimes enough," Grohl said. "As far as having a deeper, longer conversation about them, I still do reserve a lot of this for my own personal life, as impersonal and public as it may seem."

He continued, "But I think that for many reasons, I wound up in a place that I needed to stop and sit with myself and re-evaluate myself. It's an ongoing process."

In his September 2024 statement, Grohl announced that he'd "become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage" and was "doing everything I can to regain [his family's] trust and earn their forgiveness."The rocker has been married to his second wife, Jordyn Blum, since 2003, and the pair share three daughters together: Violet, Harper, and Ophelia.

Grohl also opened up about how he handled the public's reaction to his announcement.

"I had to turn everything off, one of those things being my concern for what other people think," he said. "Being able to shut off that part of yourself can be sometimes a very healthy exercise in considering life within your immediate radius. Not giving all of that so much currency within yourself that it can completely destroy yourself."

Grohl also looked back at a period in his life over several years during which he spread himself thin crafting the 2014 HBO docuseriesSonic Highways, penning his 2021 memoirThe Storyteller, and performing around the world.

"I'm like, God, what was I trying to prove? There is such a thing as addiction to achievement, and it's dangerous," Grohl said. "You'll set a goal for yourself and you put everything you have into it; the world disappears. Then you achieve that finish line, and it feels good for 24 f---ing hours, and that feeling immediately goes away. And there's that hole again, there's that emptiness, and you're like, shit, I need to fill it up with something else."

Foo Fighters performing in 2025

When asked if that somehow contributed to his infidelity, Grohl responded, "No. I think that's how I ended up overextending myself and getting lost."

He continued, "I wasn't sitting with myself and really letting [feelings] go from my head into my heart. Getting to the point where I was just like, I need to stop, turn everything off and find my heart."
