Oregon vs Ohio State Prediction: Superpower Survival Showdown

And why? These two started 1 (Ohio State) and 2 (Oregon) in both major polls, and the previous five meetings were among the most important college football games in the last 17 years. Ohio State beat Oregon 26-17 in the 2010 Rose Bowl. The next time they met was for the first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship to end the 2014 season. In 2021, Oregon's stunning 35-28 win in Columbus ended up keeping the Buckeyes out of the College Football Playoff, and then came 2024. Oregon won a 32-31 thriller in Eugene on the way to the Big Ten title and No. 1 seed in the CFP, only to get walloped by eventual national champion Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. And now, Oregon is 5-3 overall, 23rd in the College Football Playoff rankings, and out of the Big Ten and College Football Playoff picture unless it wins out and something miraculous happens. Ohio State is 6-2, but it's coming off a blah loss to USC. It's 12th in the CFP, and while it's not totally done with a loss, yeah, it's goose is realistically cooked. So no, it's not the game we expected, but it's still going to be a whopper.

Ohio State can still do this. Three of the last four games are at home, starting with this, followed by Northwestern, and then a trip to Nebraska. It all ends with the showdown against Michigan.

Oregon has an outside shot at getting to the Big Ten Championship, but it needs to win out and get a ton of help. It hosts Michigan after this, goes to Michigan State, and closes against Washington.

Ohio State is 10-2 all-time in the series, starting with a 10-7 win in the 1958 Rose Bowl.

Can Dylan Raiola do that again? Last week, the former Nebraska transfer came through with a slew of clutch plays on his way to 331 yards and three scores in the 34-26 win over Northwestern. He's been up and down – great for the most part, blah against UCLA – but if he's able to connect on more than 65% of his throws, look out. USC's Jayden Maiava didn't exactly pick apart the Ohio State defense, but he hit 65% of his throws for 222 yards and two scores in a sharp win over the Buckeyes. Before that, Josh Hoover came within a toe-tap of beating the Buckeyes. Instead, he threw for close to 300 yards in the 19-15 loss.

Luke Fahey was fine. Ohio State's defense wasn't good enough against USC, but the running game had a nice performance, pounding out over 200 yards. Fahey went a solid 21-of-38 for 260 yards with a touchdown and no picks in place of an injured Julian Sayin. Oregon doesn't control the clock or the tempo well enough. Ohio State doesn't have to force anything. This is when the defense has to step up a few notches and live in the Oregon backfield – the Ducks give up too many plays behind the line – and the running game has to be effective enough to keep the pressure off Fahey.

Oregon hasn't traveled well out of its time zone. It was fine against USC, struggled to come up with a stop in the loss to Oklahoma State, and didn't show up offensively at Illinois. Deep breath, Ohio State. The team is still talented enough to do big things, but it's not going anywhere huge unless Fahey is allowed to let it rip and make the offense his. He'll be good, the Buckeye defense will be fine – which is still 11th in the nation, despite not being as dominant as it needs to be – and this will be every bit the bounceback performance you'd expect from Ohio State.
