If you've made it into TikTok's "Group 7," consider yourself one of the lucky ones.
Another viral moment has made its way to the social media app, as people have claimed their spots in the coveted Group 7. The trend began with a social experiment started by musician Sophia James and has since exploded into a TikTok phenomenon.
In a matter of days, tens of thousands of videos have popped up under the hashtag #group7, with many users celebrating their membership. "was having a tough day but just found out i'm in group 7 . [sic] I love this little life," one user wrote.
But while thousands of TikTok users are embracing their new group identity, others are left wondering about the meaning behind the trend.
So, what does it mean to be in Group 7? Here's everything to know about the viral TikTok moment.
Where did the Group 7 trend originate?
In October 2025, James launched a social experiment to promote her new song, "So Unfair," testing which of her seven videos would reach the largest audience. In the Group 7 video, she described it as a "little science experiment to see what kind of video gets the most reach."
James told The New York Times that she had recently seen a video that said you needed to "bully" the algorithm to get your content to go viral.
"You just have to post no matter what it is — it's really quantity over quality," she told the outlet. "And so in my pursuit to get my music heard, I've really been trying all of these different strategies."

In James' initial Group 7 TikTok, she admitted she didn't have any ideas about each classification.
"I don't know what that says about you, but you're in Group 7," she said. "Welcome."
Soon after, as Group 7 began taking over the app, James leaned into its characterization.
"Group 7 is taking it," she wrote over a video the next day, captioned, "The sense of camaraderie is unmatched."
Members quickly embraced their newfound status, dubbing Group 7 "for the baddies" and "the elite group."
"We all just collectively decided that Group 7 were the cool people, the it people, the baddies," creator Jason Sappy explained in a video. "You're either in Group 7 or you're no one, in my personal opinion."
What started as just a digital social experiment has now trickled into the real world, as James shared on her website that she has planned a Group 7 meetup in London on Oct. 24.
"This is the funniest thing I have ever seen and I think you should all meet in real life," she wrote on her site.

Want to find your way into Group 7? Bad news: you can't just choose to be in Group 7 — it has to find you.
Your group is decided by which video of James' you see first, meaning it really comes down to the fate of TikTok's algorithm.
