Megan Hilty is officially leaving Death Becomes Her on Broadway. In addition setting a date for her final performance in the hit show, the production team announced Broadway favorite Betsy Wolfe will be stepping in to play the role.
It was announced on Monday, October 20, that original star Hilty, 44, will play her final performance as Madeline Ashton on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Following her exit, the role will be taken on byWolfe, 43, who will start appearing in the show on Friday, January 16.
Shortly after the Death Becomes HerInstagram page shared Wolfe's casting, several fans took to the comments section to express their excitement. "Imma miss my girl megan.. ( a lot ) but really excited to see betsy wolfe," one person commented, while another fan chimed in, "Best news I've ever heard."
"Woah I'm so HYPE," a third social media user chimed in, and an additional fan said, "THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!"
Hilty originated the role of Madeline in the show, having been attached to the project since its early development in 2023. She portrayed the part in the 2024 Chicago premiere, as well as for the entirety of its Broadway run so far.
The Smash alum earned her second Tony nomination for Death Becomes Her, which was in the Best Leading Actress in a Musical category. She was previously nominated at the 2016 awards show in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play category for her work in Noises Off.
In addition to Hilty's nomination, Death Becomes Her was also nominated for nine other awards at the 2025 Tony Awards. Paul Tazewell ultimately took home the award for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
Wolfe was also nominated at the Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Anne Hathaway in & Juliet during the 2023 ceremony. Her other Broadway credits include appearances as Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Ellen in Bullets Over Broadway, Cordelia in Falsettos and Jenna Hunterson in Waitress.

Death Becomes Her premiered on Broadway in November 2024 and follows Madeline Ashton, who is described as the "most beautiful actress (just ask her) ever to grace the stage and screen" and Helen Sharp, "the long-suffering author (just ask her) who lives in her shadow," according to the logline.
"They have always been the best of frenemies … until Madeline steals Helen's fiancé away. As Helen plots revenge and Madeline clings to her rapidly fading star, their world is suddenly turned upside down by Viola Van Horn, a mysterious woman with a secret that's to die for," the logline continued. "After one sip of Viola's magical potion, Madeline and Helen begin a new era of life (and death) with their youth and beauty restored…and a grudge to last eternity. Life's a b---h and then you die. Or not!"
