Scarlett Johansson told the story behind her cute nickname for the late Robert Redford on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday, Sept. 22

"I actually had a nickname for him that was Booey, which is something that I don't think I've ever told anybody, but now I've told everyone," she said

Scarlett Johansson is sharing how she came up with her adorable nickname for the late Robert Redford.

Johansson, 40, appeared on the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday, Sept. 22, to promote her directorial debut Eleanor the Great. During her interview with host Stephen Colbert, Johansson reflected on working with Redford, who died at 89 on Sept. 16, in 1998's The Horse Whisperer, which she filmed with the actor-director when she was just 12 years old.

"I actually had a nickname for him that was Booey, which is something that I don't think I've ever told anybody, but now I've told everyone." When Colbert asked why Johansson called Redford "Booey," she said, "I don't know. I mean, I was 12."

"He was such a warm, kind, patient, generous, wonderful man. He would take so much time with me every day — he was the director, so I got to work with him as an actor which was extraordinary and he was just so warm and we have a very special relationship in the film," Johansson added.

The Horse Whisperer marked Johansson's seventh movie role and came only four years after she made her big screen debut in 1994's North. It marked Redford's fifth film as a director. The screen legend stars in the movie as a horse trainer named Tom Booker, who is hired to help Johansson's character Grace and her horse Pilgrim recover from a near-death accident that leaves both the young girl and horse traumatized.

During Johansson's interview with Colbert, she recalled that Redford plays a character with a calming presence in The Horse Whisperer and said that "he in real life had that type of persona" as well.

"Just so calm and kind and patient," Johansson said of Redford. "Every scene we would do he would talk me through where my character had been through up until that point, and it was like he had all the time to do that. It was transformative for me. I had a complete understanding of 'Oh, this is actually a craft, and something you get better at and understand more the more you put into it.' That was all because of Bob, Mr. Redford-slash Booey. He was a wonderful man."

Johansson told PEOPLE of Redford's generosity and patience with her on the set of The Horse Whisperer in a statement she shared after news of his death broke on Sept. 16.

"No matter the reality of the day's rush, I always felt he had all the time in the world for our work," she said, in part. "Bob created an environment on set that was calm and precious; a place where actors could make discoveries. He was patient and warm and kind. Bob taught me what acting could be, and it was from his generosity and patience that I was inspired to pursue the possibilities of the craft."

Johansson's new movie Eleanor the Great is in theaters Sept. 26.
