The Trump Administration has suspended nearly all types of nonimmigrant visas for Palestinian passport holders, U.S. officials told the New York Times.

The blanket suspension marks an escalation from earlier restrictions on Palestinians seeking to enter the U.S. The policy, issued in an Aug. 18 cable from the State Department to all U.S. embassies and consulates, temporarily suspends visas for medical treatment, university studies, visits to friends or relatives, and business, according to the Times. It is not clear how long the suspension will remain in place.

"While the Department has determined that the Palestinian Authority (PA) is a competent authority for passport issuing purposes … the United States does NOT recognize the PA as a 'foreign government,'" the cable said, according to CNN.

Here's what to know about the new measure.

Policy expands U.S. visa curbs on Palestinians

The internal message reportedly instructed embassies and consulates to deny nonimmigrant visas to "all otherwise eligible Palestinian Authority passport holders." The guidance also applies to Palestinian passport holders applying for diplomatic or official visas, the cable reportedly said.

The cable reportedly instructs officials to invoke section 221-G of the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act in refusing the visas, which requires U.S. officials to conduct a further review of the applicant. The policy does not affect people with dual nationalities who apply for a visa using a different passport.

The State Department began revoking and denying the visas of Palestinian officials last week ahead of the United Nations General Assembly this month. Earlier in August, the U.S. also said it would stop issuing visitor visas to Palestinians from Gaza, including those seeking humanitarian and medical treatment.

Palestinian passport holders—whether from Gaza, the Israeli-occupied West Bank, or elsewhere—will be impacted by the new measures. Palestinian Authority passports have been issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Interior, subject to Israeli approval, since 1995. It's unclear how many people hold Palestinian passports today.

Measures come as international condemnation of Israel grows

The directive comes as a growing number of countries have condemned Israel's ongoing military bombardment of Gaza and what several humanitarian organizations have described as a genocide.

The nearly two-year-long Israel-Hamas war has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians and nearly 2,000 Israelis (including those killed in the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel), according to Gaza's Health Ministry and Israeli authorities. In the absence of independent monitoring on the ground, Gaza's Health Ministry is the primary source for casualty data relied upon by humanitarian groups, journalists, and international bodies. Its figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants and cannot be independently verified by TIME. Data from the Israel Defense Forces indicates a Palestinian civilian death rate of 83%. The figure for Israeli casualties includes both civilians and combatants.

Several U.S. allies have criticized Israel over its killing of aid seekers, humanitarian workers, and journalists, as well as its blockade of humanitarian aid and forced displacement of Palestinians. Canada, France, and the U.K., said in July that they will recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming U.N. General Assembly—with more countries following suit—prompting condemnations from Israel and the U.S., Israel's biggest ally.

The Trump Administration has also cracked down on pro-Palestinian activism across the U.S., including introducing new immigration and citizenship restrictions that include screening for "anti-Americanism" and targeting pro-Palestinian student activists for immigration action, which critics say has chilled free speech.

"Every visa decision is a national security decision, and the State Department is vetting and adjudicating visa decisions for PA passport holders accordingly," a State Department spokesperson told CNN. But not everyone accepts that pretense.

"Are there true national security concerns?" Kerry Doyle, former lead attorney for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the Biden Administration, questioned to the Times. "Or is it politically based to support the position of Israel and/or to avoid uncomfortable issues being raised when folks get here if they speak out about the issues over the war?"

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A strong earthquake in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border has killed at least 250 people and injured at least 500 others, officials said.

The quake late Sunday hit a series of towns in the province of Kunar, near the city of Jalalabad in neighboring Nangahar province. The 6.0 magnitude at 11:47 p.m. was centered 27 kilometers (17 miles) east-northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was just 8 kilometers (5 miles) deep. Shallower quakes tend to cause more damage.

The Kunar Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that at least 250 people were killed and 500 others injured in the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapadare.

Jalalabad is a bustling trade city due to its proximity with neighboring Pakistan and a key border crossing between the countries. Although it has a population of about 300,000 according to the municipality, it's metropolitan area is thought to be far larger. Most of its buildings are low-rise constructions, mostly of concrete and brick, and its outlying areas include homes built of mud bricks and wood. Many are of poor construction.

Jalalabad also has considerable agriculture and farming, including citrus fruit and rice, with the Kabul River flowing through the city.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2023, followed by strong aftershocks. The Taliban government estimated at least 4,000 people perished.

The U.N. gave a far lower death toll of about 1,500. It was the deadliest natural disaster to strike Afghanistan in recent memory.

Multiple media outlets are coordinating a large-scale protest on Monday to demand Israel stop the killing of journalists in Gaza and call for international press to be allowed into the enclave to report freely.

Nearly 200 outlets from 50 countries will take part in the demonstration, according to organizers, with print newspapers running blacked-out front pages, broadcasters and radio stations interrupting their programming and online outlets disrupting their home pages.

The protest, coordinated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Avaaz and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), aims to draw attention to the alarming number of journalists killed during Israel's war in Gaza.

At least 210 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, IFJ said, making the conflict the deadliest for reporters in modern times. Meanwhile, Israel has barred international media from reporting freely in Gaza, leaving Palestinian journalists to report under fire.

"At the rate at which journalists are being killed in Gaza by the IDF, soon there will be no one left to keep the world informed. This is not only a war on Gaza, it is a war on journalism itself," said Thibat Bruttin, director general of RSF.

"Journalists are being killed, they are being targeted, they are being defamed. Without them, who will speak of famine, who will expose war crimes, who will denounce genocides?"

The demonstration comes after the recent killings of several prominent Palestinian journalists in Gaza.

In early August, Israel killed five staff members from the news network Al Jazeera in a strike on Gaza City, days after the security cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved a plan to take over the city.

Among those killed was Anas Al-Sharif, one of the most well-known Palestinian journalists in Gaza. He became a household name for many in the Arab world due to his daily coverage of the conflict and its humanitarian toll.

Last week, Israel killed another five journalists in back-to-back strikes on the Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis, in a tactic known as a "double tap."

After the first strike on the hospital, people rushed to treat the wounded while journalists arrived to report. Then, Israel struck again.

Video obtained exclusively by CNN showed the second "tap" was in fact two near-simultaneous strikes. These second and third strikes appear to have caused most of the deaths.

Netanyahu conceded the incident was a "tragic mishap."

TIANJIN (Reuters) -Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Shanghai Cooperation Organisation members to leverage their "mega-scale market" on Monday, while unveiling his ambition for a new global security and economic order that poses a challenge to the United States.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) has set a model for a new type of international relations, Xi said in opening remarks addressing more than 20 world leaders at a two-day summit held in northern China's port city Tianjin.

"We should advocate for equal and orderly multipolarisation of the world, inclusive economic globalisation and promote the construction of a more just and equitable global governance system," he said.

China will provide 2 billion yuan ($280 million) of free aid to member states this year and a further 10 billion yuan of loans to a SCO banking consortium, he added.

"We must take advantage of the mega-scale market... to improve the level of trade and investment facilitation," said Xi, urging the bloc to boost cooperation in fields including energy, infrastructure, science and technology, and artificial intelligence.

Russia's Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia attended the opening ceremony in a major show of Global South solidarity.

The security-focused bloc, which began as a group of six Eurasian nations, has expanded to 10 permanent members and 16 dialogue and observer countries in recent years.

Xi also called on organisation partners to "oppose Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation" and to support multilateral trade systems, an apparent dig at U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war which has disproportionately affected developing economies such as India, whose exports were hit with a 50% levy last week.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said China played a "fundamental" role in upholding global multilateralism on Sunday.

Analysts say China will use this year's largest-ever summit to demonstrate an alternative vision of global governance to the American-led international order at a time of erratic policymaking, a U.S. retreat from multilateral organisations and geopolitical flux.

Beijing has also used the summit as an opportunity to mend ties with New Delhi.

Modi, who is in China on his first visit in seven years, and Xi both agreed on Sunday their countries are development partners, not rivals, and discussed ways to improve trade ties amid the global tariff uncertainty.

Indonesian political parties have agreed to cut lawmakers' benefits, President Prabowo Subianto said on Sunday, in a bid to calm anti-government protests that have killed at least five people in the country's worst violence in decades.

Protests began on Monday over what demonstrators called excessive pay and housing allowances for parliamentarians, escalating into riots on Friday after a motorcycle rideshare driver was killed during police action at a protest site.

Homes of political party members and state buildings were ransacked or set ablaze, shaking investor confidence in the Southeast Asian economy and triggering a steep selloff on its stocks and currency markets on Friday.

Looters broke into a house owned by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati outside the capital Jakarta overnight, state news agency Antara reported on Sunday. She was not in the house at the time and it was not clear if she uses the property often.

More protests are planned for Monday, and student groups did not call them off after Prabowo's announcement.

Prabowo, speaking at a press conference at the Presidential Palace and flanked by the leaders of various political parties, said he had ordered the military and police to take stern action against rioters and looters. He said some of the unrest bore the signs of terrorism and treason.

"Leaders in parliament have conveyed that they will revoke a number of parliament policies, including the size of allowances for members of parliament and a moratorium on overseas work trips," Prabowo said.

"To the police and the military, I have ordered them to take action as firm as possible against the destruction of public facilities, looting at homes of individuals and economic centers, according to the laws," he added.

Challenge to Prabowo

The protests represent the most significant challenge yet to Prabowo's government, which has faced little political opposition since taking office nearly a year ago.

Prabowo, who canceled a high-profile trip to China due to the unrest, also met on Sunday with key members of his cabinet at the Presidential Palace to discuss the situation.

Many ministers and political leaders arriving at the palace used civilian number plates instead of special ones given to officials, a witness said, in an apparent security measure as unrest simmered in some places.

The military was deployed to guard the palace on top of the usual secret service detail. Many key ministers' homes and government installations were also being guarded by the military on Sunday.

It remains unclear who is behind the rioting and looting that followed the protests, which were initially organized by student associations.

Muzammil Ihsan, head of the All Indonesian Students' Executives Body, the country's largest student umbrella group, told Reuters cutting lawmakers' perks was "not enough" and said further demonstrations were being "considered."

"The government must resolve deep-rooted problems. The anger on the streets is not without cause," Ihsan said.

Tegar Afriansyah, the chairman of a smaller student group, Indonesian Student League for Democracy, which has been protesting since Monday, said the presidential announcement does not address the root of the problem, which is "political oligarchy and an unequal economic structure."

He termed Prabowo's instructions to police and military as "clearly repressive and intimidating."

Global rights watchdog Amnesty International's Indonesia chapter in a statement termed Prabowo's use of terms such as treason and terrorism as "excessive."

TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, said it had suspended its live feature in Indonesia for a few days.

The death toll rose to five on Sunday, according to the local disaster management agency in Makassar, South Sulawesi province. It said an online motorcycle taxi driver was beaten to death by a mob accusing him of being an intelligence agent.

Three others were killed in an arson attack on the local parliament building on Friday.

Former FBI Director and special counsel Robert Mueller has been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, leading the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to withdraw a subpoena, according to the New York Times.

Mueller had been subpoenaed to testify on the FBI's handling of a federal probe into disgraced financial advisor Jeffrey Epstein in the 2000s, the Times reported. The House Oversight Committee is probing how the George W. Bush administration handled the case, in which Epstein reached a plea agreement. (RELATED: 'Really Astonishing': Jonathan Turley Stunned By Brennan, Clapper Russiagate Claims In NYT Op-Ed)

Mueller has been living in a memory-care facility according to previous reporting, which did not mention specifics about the cause for the move. The House Oversight Committee reportedly withdrew its subpoena of Mueller August 18 due to his health issues.

During President Donald Trump's first term, the Department of Justice (DOJ) appointed Mueller as a special counsel to look into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. A report Mueller penned following the investigation concluded that there was no collusion between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign.

Epstein, who pleaded guilty to sex charges in 2008, reportedly committed suicide in his Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial after he was arrested in 2019 on new charges.

The disgraced financier had extensive ties to celebrities, politicians, and executives, even after he was a convicted sex offender. Among those who were known to have been close were L Brands founder Lex Wexner, director Woody Allen, and Prince Andrew.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also met with Epstein repeatedly, as did employees of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with Gates meeting with the registered sex offender as late as 2019 despite concerns expressed by his then-wife, Melinda, according to a May 2021 report by The Wall Street Journal.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has cast his country as a force for global economic stability and pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to support its partners, at a time when President Donald Trump wages a global tariff war and has decimated foreign aid under his "America First" policy.

Xi's comments came during an address on Monday that is the centerpiece of a two-day summit orchestrated to play-up China's global leadership and its close and enduring partnership with Russia, as the two neighbors seek to rebalance global power in their favor at the expense of the US and its allies.

"We should leverage the strength of our mega-sized markets and economic complementarity between member states and improve trade and investment facilitation," Xi told world leaders in the Chinese port city of Tianjin for a summit of the Beijing- and Moscow-backed Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The Chinese leader pledged 2 billion yuan ($280 million) in grants to SCO member states this year, and to set up a SCO Development Bank to provide "stronger underpinnings" for security and economic cooperation among the bloc.

Without naming the United States, Xi vowed to oppose "hegemonism," "Cold War mentality" and "bullying practices" in an address to political heavyweights from across the world, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan.

Those phrases are often deployed by Xi to criticize what he sees as a world order led by the US and its Western allies.

The summit is a showcase for closer ties between China and Russia, as well as the friendship struck up over the years by their two autocratic leaders.

The deep personal rapport between the two men was on show Sunday evening, when Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan hosted a welcome banquet for attending leaders.

Footage released by Russian state news agency RIA showed Xi and Putin gesturing animatedly and smiling as they chatted at the event, showing a different side of the typically restrained Chinese leader – and his warm and relaxed demeanor with his Russian counterpart.

The pair then walked shoulder to shoulder together after posing for a photo alongside other gathered leaders, with Xi gesturing for Putin to walk with him past the others, footage released by the Kremlin showed.

The SCO summit is also the leaders' first opportunity to meet since Putin's summit with Trump in Alaska earlier this month – and comes as Putin resists Western pressure to end his onslaught in Ukraine.

Just last week, Moscow's forces carried out their second largest aerial attack to date on Ukraine.

Observers say that Xi sees the gathering – and a massive military parade that he'll host on Wednesday in Beijing, expected to be attended by Putin, North Korea's Kim Jong Un as well as some two dozen other leaders – as a critically timed diplomatic push.

As Trump alarms nations with his global trade war and withdraws from international organizations and foreign aid, Beijing views the US as undermining the international order it worked to build – and sees an opportunity to ramp its own vision as an alternative.

Chinese officials touted this year's SCO as the largest yet, saying ahead of the event that 20 leaders from across Asia and the Middle East would join. In addition to Russia, China and India, SCO members include Iran, Pakistan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un examined a "newly inaugurated" missile production line on Sunday before a planned trip to Beijing to witness a massive military parade alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During Sunday's inspection, Kim learned about the "overall condition of the state missile production capacity," North Korean state media reported on Monday.

Images published by KCNA appeared to show Kim at an undisclosed location inspecting several dozen missiles in various stages of production and talking with uniformed officers.

Kim's inspection this Sunday comes as he prepares to travel to Beijing, where China's military parade on Wednesday will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II following Japan's formal surrender.

North Korea has ramped up its weapons program in the last few years, rapidly modernizing its armed forces, developing new weapons and testing intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach almost anywhere in the United States. It has also deployed troops to fight with Russia in the Ukraine war, gaining crucial battlefield experience.

Kim has also shrugged off overtures from the new South Korean government and recently repeated his vow to build up the country's nuclear program and threatened to use it to destroy South Korea if attacked.

Just a week ago, North Korea tested two new air defense missiles after accusing Seoul of fomenting tensions at the border – days before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung was set to meet US President Donald Trump.

According to the KCNA report Monday, North Korea had "successfully fulfilled" its five-year plan to expand its missile production capacity.

"Various kinds of missiles were put into serial production," the agency reported, adding that Kim had ratified three new long-term plans "related to missile production capacity."

Kim's trip abroad this week will put him in the company of two dozen foreign leaders at a closely watched event hosted by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The parade offers the reclusive head of the world's most heavily sanctioned regime a rare opportunity to appear alongside other world leaders who are gravitating toward an alternative world order championed by Xi and Putin.

The trip will be Kim's first trip to China since 2019. Kim, who has only embarked on 10 foreign trips since assuming power in 2011, last left his isolated country in 2023 to meet Putin at a remote spaceport in Russia's far east.

North Korea and Russia have drawn closer together since Moscow invaded Ukraine, with Pyongyang sending both soldiers and equipment to aide Russia's fight. Experts warn that Putin may be providing military and technological assistance in exchange – potentially boosting North Korea's weapons and space programs.

(Reuters) -Russian president Vladimir Putin said on Monday that understandings reached during his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump at a summit in August open a way to find a resolution to the crisis in Ukraine.

"In this regard, we highly appreciate the efforts and proposals from China and India aimed at facilitating the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis," Putin said at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation forum in Tianjin.

"I would also note that the understandings reached at the recent Russia–U.S. meeting in Alaska, I hope, also contribute toward this goal."

(Reuters) -A summer trading lull looks set to come to a halt with September risks stacking up hard and fast.

U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and French political turmoil provide a glimpse of what's to come in a month that historically brings notable market swings as investors reassess portfolios.

"My big concern is that when liquidity comes back after the summer, we see some big market moves," said St. James's Place CIO Justin Onuekwusi.

1/ TROUBLE AT THE FED

U.S. jobs numbers have become contentious after July data prompted Trump to fire the Bureau of Labor Statistics chief.

So, August's reading, due on September 5, and the Fed's September 16–17 meeting come at a time when investors are already concerned about tension between Trump and the central bank.

Fed chief Jerome Powell, whom Trump has pressured to cut rates, signalled a September move in his Jackson Hole speech, but also warned about sticky inflation.

Markets price in a roughly 85% chance of a rate cut this month, but questions about the Fed's independence have heightened uncertainty over the rate outlook and its ability to control inflation.

"This latest political drama reignites concerns about the independence of the Fed, and by extension undermines confidence in the U.S. as the global benchmark for transparent and rules-based capital markets," said Swissquote Bank senior analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya.

2/ NO CONFIDENCE

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou is expected to lose a September 8 confidence vote over government budget-cut plans, highlighting risks to European shares, French banks and long-term French bonds, yields of which are near their highest since 2011.

If the minority government falls, President Emmanuel Macron could install a new premier or dissolve parliament and hold new legislative elections, leaving budget issues unresolved for longer and raising French ratings downgrade risks.

Fitch Ratings updates its view on France on September 12, followed by DBRS on the 19th, and Scope on the 26th.

"If France fails, there will be a domino effect, and we will have to question the sustainability of the performance of European markets," said Stephane Ekolo, global equity strategist at broker Tradition.

3/ DON'T FORGET GEOPOLITICS

After last month's Alaska summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, investors are assessing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

In a sign of fading peace hopes, Ukraine's bonds have given back nearly half of the price gains made ahead of the August meeting.

Supercharged European defence stocks remain popular as Europe commits to higher defence spending.

Also watch Brent crude oil prices, sensitive to headlines and supply disruptions as Russia and Ukraine step up attacks on each other's energy infrastructure.

A punitive 25% tariff, imposed by Trump on imports from India due to its purchases of Russian oil, has been added to a prior 25% tariff on many goods.

But positive developments could benefit energy-sensitive stocks and firms that could play a role in Ukraine's reconstruction such as materials group Holcim.

4/ TARIFF ANGST

Tariff-driven headline risk has fallen since April's "Liberation Day" market turmoil.

The U.S. has agreed preliminary trade deals with Britain, the European Union, among others, but Trump has increased the heat on other big economies such as India, meaning tariff risks could still cause pain.

Traders are also watching to see if a recent U.S./China temporary tariff extension will become permanent or if Trump will again upend global supply chains with a fresh wave of prohibitively high duties on Chinese imports.

5/ BEWARE

Investors warn record high stock markets reflect complacency and are a reason for caution.

September is a historically weak month for shares. The MSCI World Index has dropped by nearly 4% on average each September since 2020.

While August has historically been strong for U.S. equities, September is the only month with negative average returns.

6/ UNEASE IN BOND LAND

Finally, pay attention to bond markets given rising government borrowing and the sustainability of public finances.

The United States, Japan and Germany all sell long-dated bonds in the first half of September in the next test of investor appetite.

Japan's 30-year bond yields, up almost 100 basis points so far this year, are at record highs, while those in Europe are near multi-year peaks.

Charlie Woods added another hole-in-one to his young resume, this time doing so at the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Woods, the 16-year-old son of golf legend Tiger Woods, stepped up to his tee shot on the par-3 third hole, and he hit a pure shot as it drew into the green 177 yards away.

Woods watched as the ball landed on the green, and it drained, leading to a celebration on the tee box with his playing partners.

Woods ended up carding a 72, which was even-par, on Sunday. He finished 7-over for the tournament, which had him well outside the top of the leaderboard.

This wasn't the first hole-in-one of Woods' career, as he hit one while playing alongside his father at the PNC Championship in December 2024, with his father ecstatic when he saw the ball fall into the hole.

Tiger had 20 hole-in-ones during his legendary career, though only three occurred during official PGA Tour events.

He may not have won this tournament, but Woods added some hardware to his trophy case earlier this year with the Team TaylorMade Invitational win at Streamsong Resort Black Course in Bowling Green, Florida. It was his first American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) victory of his young career.

Tiger Woods, left, and his son Charlie Woods fist bump after making their putt on the 13th green during the final round of the PNC Championship golf tournament, Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, in Orlando, Fla.

Woods has more wins on his resume, as he won the 14-15-year-old category at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Major Championship in June 2023. He also won the Last Chance Regional golf tournament later that year.

Woods qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur last summer, but he failed to make the cut there.

Of course, the expectations are going to be astronomical for Woods due to his father's accomplishments, but the talent is certainly there to go the distance as a professional.

Charlie Woods hits his tee shot on the first hole during the final round of the 2025 Junior PGA Championship at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex on Friday, August 1, 2025 in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Tiger has 82 professional wins under his belt, including the career Grand Slam with wins at the Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship. Those 82 wins are tied with Sam Snead for the most ever.

Amazon Prime Video is expanding its Christian programming offerings once again with a series order for the animated adventure comedy "The Chosen Adventures."

Prime Video has ordered 14 11-minute episodes of the series, which is co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios and 5&2 Studios, the latter of which produces the hit series "The Chosen." The series will premiere all episodes on Prime Video on Oct. 17 in the U.S. and internationally in the U.K, Latin America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and Sub Saharan Africa.

Per the official logline for "The Chosen Adventures," the show "follows nine-year-old Abby and her best friend Joshua as they navigate life in the ancient city of Capernaum. When the children encounter a wise craftsman and teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, he helps them change the way they see the world, and they help spread his influence far and wide (among the 7 to 12-year-old set). And did we mention that she has a talking sheep?"

The Chosen Adventures stars Paul Walter Hauser as Sheep, Yvonne Orji as Pigeon, Romy Fay as Abby, Jude Zarzaur as Joshua, Danny Nucci as Abba and Zehra Fazal as Eema.

Other recurring and guest voice cast members include: "The Chosen" star Jonathan Roumie as Jesus, Jordin Sparks as Fish, Paras Patel as Matthew, Elizabeth Tabish as Mary, Noah James as Andrew, Joey Vahedi as Thomas, George H. Xanthis as John, Yasmine Al-Bustami as Ramah, Brandon Potter as Quintus, Banks Pierce as Hilarius Maximus, and Julian Grant as Cyrius Maximus.

Ryan Swanson serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Dallas Jenkins executive produces under the 5&2 Studios banner. Chris Juen, Chad Gundersen, Keith Alcorn, Kellen Erskine, and Derral Eves also serve as executive producers, alongside producer Erin Elizabeth Gardner and co-producer Myesha Gosselin.

Jenkins had originally revealed plans for "The Chosen Adventures" in an interview with Variety in 2024. The show falls under Jenkins' and 5&2's multi-faceted deal with Amazon MGM Studios, which was announced in February along with Amazon's acquisition of exclusive U.S. streaming rights to and a theatrical release of new installments of "The Chosen." 5&2 also recently landed a greenlight for the series "Joseph of Egypt" at Prime Video.

News of the animated series order comes on the same day that Amazon announced the launch date for the Wonder Project subscription offering on Prime Video. The launch coincides with the second season premiere of the Biblical series "House of David," which is produced by Wonder Project.

MIDLOTHIAN, TX – Amazon Prime Video will soon be blessing audiences with an animated spinoff of "The Chosen."

The streaming service plans 14 11-minute episodes of "The Chosen Adventures," inspired by the biblical drama. "Adventures" centers on Abby (Romy Fay), a character introduced in Season 1 of the live-action series depicting the life of Jesus (Jonathan Roumie). Abby, 9, lives in Capernaum and is full of curiosity. But she feels no one can satisfy her inquisitiveness until she and her best friend Joshua (Jude Zarzaur) cross paths with Jesus (also voiced by Roumie). The series is expected to arrive later in 2025.

In the third episode of the original series, Jesus spends time with a group of children "and people resonated with that episode so deeply," "The Chosen" creator Dallas Jenkins says on the set of his hit series while filming Season 6. Jenkins is an executive producer on "Adventures." "So when we started to realize that there was an opportunity to do an animated show, to explore these stories even more from the perspective of children," he thought the children who appeared in the earlier series were a "perfect" fit.

It's not merely a retelling of "The Chosen, but it's the random things that kids at that time would've gone through," Jenkins says, with a "whimsical tone."

"It will explore their lives," Roumie says, "and their questions about what it means to have faith, and who Jesus was and what impact his teachings have on their lives in a way that is done from a kid's perspective. ... Adults will still get so much out of it, but kids will love to see their perspective and their attitudes and the questions they may have; their curiosity reflected in this show."

"The Chosen Adventures" centers on Abby (Romy Fay) and her best friend Joshua (Jude Zarzaur), two children introduced in Season 1 of biblical drama "The Chosen."

"Adventures" introduces new characters to the "Chosen" universe. Paul Walter Hauser will voice a sheep character and Yvonne Orji a pigeon. Jordin Sparks has been cast as Fish. In addition to Roumie, other actors from "The Chosen" include Yasmine Al-Bustami (Ramah), Noah James (Andrew), Paras Patel (Matthew), Brandon Potter (Quintus), Elizabeth Tabish (Mary Magdalene), Joey Vahedi (Thomas) and George H. Xanthis (John).

Roumie says his portrayal of Jesus in the animated series will resemble his representation in the drama.

"I wanted to approach it just a little bit softer because he is coming in for these moments of teaching and wisdom," he says. "You don't get the fullness of the conversations with Jesus on the adult level, but you get the important nuggets of wisdom that kids I think will be able to draw from and use in their own lives."

WELLINGTON (Reuters) -New Zealand will allow some wealthy overseas-based investors with an investor residence visa to buy or build a house as long as it is worth at least NZ$5 million ($2.94 million), Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Monday.

In April, the New Zealand government relaxed rules for the foreign investor migrant visa. This included lowering the minimum required funds for the category that focuses on higher-risk investments to NZ$5 million from NZ$15 million, and removing the English language requirement.

However, those on the visa, who were not in New Zealand for six months a year, were still unable to buy property.

Luxon said in a statement that the government would make changes to allow those on the visa to buy or build one home.

He added the property had to cost at least NZ$5 million.

"This change navigates a path between those who do not want foreign ownership opened up, and the desire to attract high net worth investors by deepening their connection to our country to help grow the economy," Luxon said.

- - Here are the top GOP contenders to succeed Trump for president in 2028

Niall StanageAugust 31, 2025 at 12:00 PM

President Trump is dominating the political stage for now. But attention will shift soon enough toward the 2028 race.

Trump has at times entertained the idea of seeking a third term — a notion encouraged by some of the most combative voices in MAGA World such as Steve Bannon.

The near-universal expert view is that such a quest would be flagrantly unconstitutional. Trump would also be 82 by Election Day 2028.

Assuming Trump indeed exits the White House for a final time at the end of his second term, the battle to succeed him will be fierce.

Tomorrow, The Hill will publish similar rankings for Democrats in 2028. For now, here's where the Republican field stands.

1. Vice President Vance

Vice President Vance is the most obvious inheritor of Trump's mantle.

Part of the reason is simple: He is the much-younger vice president to an incumbent president.

But there are more Vance-specific factors as well.

The vice president has long ago abandoned the criticisms of Trump that he once leveled. Despite the vigor of those critiques — he mulled to a friend in 2016 whether Trump could end up being "America's Hitler" — he appears to have been forgiven by the MAGA base.

Vance is helped in connecting with Trump's working-class supporters by his famously difficult upbringing, as memorialized in his book "Hillbilly Elegy."

The vice president also shares Trump's isolationist instincts on foreign policy — a tendency most obviously seen when the duo berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office earlier this year.

Vance is often combative with the media but he has not made many enemies within the Trump-era GOP. Figures like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FBI Director Kash Patel are all much more controversial within the party.

There are still question marks over some of Vance's political instincts. During last year's campaign, a 2021 jibe about "childless cat ladies" came back to haunt him.

But for now, there's no real doubt that Vance is the Republican front-runner to succeed Trump.

2. Donald Trump Jr.

Donald Trump Jr.'s lofty position on this list is rooted less in his political skills — which are unproven, at best — than in the plausible possibility he would benefit from his father's hold over the party.

The elder Trump has been able to survive numerous furors — two impeachments, Jan. 6 and felony convictions on 34 counts — because he inspires such fervent personal loyalty from his base.

The question is whether the father's supporters would transfer their allegiance to his eldest son.

The younger Trump for now mostly confines himself to aggressive social media posts, an equally fiery podcast called "Triggered" and tending to his business interests.

One doubt around the younger Trump is whether he would bring the same negatives as his father — both men are widely loathed by liberals — without the same positives with the GOP base.

Still, a second Trump candidacy would automatically have to be taken seriously.

3. Sen. Tom Cotton (Ark.)

Sen. Tom Cotton's decision to take a pass on the 2024 race for the GOP nomination looks wise in retrospect.

Trump would almost certainly have been the victor whomever he ran against — and Cotton's image with the MAGA faithful has not been besmirched by any perceived disloyalty.

Cotton, an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has a sure touch for the kind of political positioning that has a visceral appeal for many Republican voters.

One recent example is his insistence that former special counsel Jack Smith should be investigated for — in Cotton's view — improperly seeking to influence the 2024 election by his criminal probes of Trump. Smith, through his lawyers, has emphatically denied this.

Cotton is a strong speaker and media performer, with a more hawkish view of foreign affairs than Vance.

He would be an immediate top-tier contender if he runs in 2028.

4. Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas)

The 2016 GOP primary seems a very, very long time ago. But back then, Sen. Ted Cruz was by far Trump's most serious rival for the GOP nomination.

The 2016 campaign was also a bitter one, with Trump making bizarre allegations against Cruz's father and wife, and the Texas senator hitting back in kind.

Cruz called Trump a "pathological liar" and famously declined to endorse him at that year's Republican National Convention.

Cruz has positioned himself in a far more Trump-friendly way since then, and he is one of the best-known Republicans nationwide.

There's no doubt about the Texas senator's fervent conservatism, on cultural and economic issues alike.

The bigger question is whether he is too distrusted in some MAGA quarters to win.

5. Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Marco Rubio suffers from some of the same problems as Cruz, though his current position at the heart of the Trump administration could help him.

Rubio, like Cruz, ran against Trump in 2016 and threw plenty of verbal barbs the president's way. Trump derided his then-rival as "Lil' Marco."

Now, Rubio is a frequent presence on television fiercely defending Trump's foreign policy approach.

Yet Rubio is also capable, at least to some degree, of bridging the gap between the "America First" isolationism of the MAGA movement and the more old-style hawkish Republicanism he previously embraced.

Still, there is often a sense that Rubio has never quite lived up to his promise.

First elected as a senator representing Florida 15 years ago, a 2013 Time magazine cover billed Rubio as "The Republican Savior."

Republican voters have never quite agreed.

6. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis

Gov. Ron DeSantis has helped rehabilitate himself with voters loyal to Trump in recent months by his championing of Alligator Alcatraz, the highly controversial immigration detention facility in Florida's Everglades.

Trump visited the facility during the summer, but it's actually run by the state of Florida — and thus, ultimately, by DeSantis.

A judge has ordered the facility closed amid a case that DeSantis has fiercely contested. The governor also announced earlier this month that his state will open a second facility, which he has christened "Deportation Depot."

It's the kind of move that saw DeSantis emerge as Trump's most serious rival in the 2024 nomination process.

But in the end, that campaign was very underwhelming — and clearly hurt DeSantis's standing and future ambitions.

7. Sen. Josh Hawley (Mo.)

Sen. Josh Hawley could pull a surprise in the 2028 race, if he were to run.

Besides Trump himself, he is the Republican who courts working-class support more ostentatiously than any other.

Hawley is a vigorous critic of stock trading by members of Congress, for example, and he made an unlikely alliance with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to try to cap interest rates on credit cards.

He is also more pro-labor than most Republicans, a stance reflected in moves like him pushing a bill that would have pressed employers not to use delaying tactics when negotiating union contracts.

Critics on the left see Hawley's efforts as a pose, especially given his staunch social conservatism. He is also regarded with some suspicion by some members of his own party.

But a Hawley bid is one of the more intriguing possibilities for 2028.

8. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.)

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene would be the most controversial possible choice by the GOP — a title for which there is stiff competition.

The Georgia congresswoman has been an inflammatory figure in American politics since she first won her seat in 2020. She has tangled with numerous Democrats, once getting into a particularly heated contretemps with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) just off the House floor.

But Greene has also mixed it up with fellow Republicans like Rep. Lauren Boebert (Colo.) and MAGA influencers like Laura Loomer.

Greene, intriguingly, has been to the fore among the GOP in expressing opposition to Israeli actions in Gaza. In July, she became the first Republican member of Congress to call those deeds a "genocide."

The following month, she caused another stir by accusing her own party of having "turned its back on America First, and the workers and just regular Americans."

Is she electable nationally? Many people would say no, and it would be a huge gamble on the GOP's part to even consider nominating her.

9. Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.)

Sen. Tim Scott, a famously affable presence even in an increasingly acrimonious Senate, is well regarded by Trump, and by virtually every faction in today's GOP.

He's also the sole Black Republican senator, a status that could perhaps help the GOP make further inroads with Black voters if he were to somehow make it to the nomination.

Scott never really got traction as a 2020 candidate, however; and there's no obvious reason to believe he would vault past the people higher up this list in 2028.
