On the afternoon of January 20, US Border Patrol agents in a remote corner of Vermont turned on the blue and red flashing lights of their unmarked pickup truck and forced a Toyota Prius to pull over. It was a routine stop to check the occupants weren't illegal migrants. But there was nothing routine about what followed. The driver of the Toyota, 21-year-old Teresa Youngblut, and her passenger, a German transwoman named Ophelia Bauckholt, were already under police surveillance after staff at their motel had become suspicious.
