Today's inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States could not be more different from when he was sworn in as the 45th President eight long years ago. Back then Trump was regarded by the American Establishment as a vulgar intruder, propelled to power with Kremlin connivance (the media was obsessed with 'Russian collusion', which somehow it never managed to prove) and the backing, in Hillary Clinton's memorable phrase, of a 'basket of deplorables', her snobbish (and self-defeating) reference to a white, working-class voter base with unfashionable opinions.
