Images reveal remains of 'ghost city' in the middle of Pacific Ocean

Comprehensive, precision-laser surveys, conducted via aircraft over the tiny Pacific island of Temwen, have revealed just how advanced its lost city Nan Madol once was. Sometimes called 'the Venice of the Pacific,' this megalithic stone city has drawn comparisons to mythic Atlantis — and even inspired horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, who drew upon news of the site's 1928 discovery as he wrote 'The Call of Cthulhu.' But now scores of researchers are in a race to uncover the full extent of Nan Madol's ruins as they undertake plans to preserve the city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
