NEED TO KNOW

  • "He was so handsome and so charismatic and really lovely," Couric tells PEOPLE

  • JFK Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette have drawn increased public interest due to Ryan Murphy's FX series, Love Story

In May 1999,Katie CouricinterviewedJohn F. Kennedy Jr.for theTodayshow in what would become his last TV interview. Two months later, Kennedy, 38,died in a plane crash off Martha's Vineyardthat claimed not only his life, but the lives of his wife,Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, 33, and her sister,Lauren Bessette, 34.

More than 25 years later, Couric is opening up to PEOPLE about that interview, including a memorable breakfast meeting that helped her land it and the memories of him that still stick with her today.

Before he had agreed to the interview (which Couric says she was chasing "for a long time"), JFK Jr. first met the journalist and her producer, Lori Beecher, for breakfast to discuss the opportunity. They went to Michael's — a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan — which "doesn't really serve breakfast," Couric says with a laugh, "but they sat us down anyway."

"I remember he asked for cereal with fruit, and they brought out, I think, cornflakes or some kind of cereal, and they had cut up honeydew melon on top of it," she says. "We all were laughing, like, 'What?' But I think they were trying their best at this restaurant that didn't really serve breakfast to accommodate this trio: Lori, John and I."

"I think after the cereal and melon incident — he was so funny and nice about it — that I expected him to be that way in an interview," Couric notes.

When he eventually agreed to the interview (which was to promote the Kennedy family'sProfile in Courageaward), he was just as down to earth and rode his bike to the studio.

"He was so handsome and so charismatic and really lovely," she says. "We sat down, and he was just as nice as he could be. And I just remember, obviously, I think you could see it all over my face, being utterly charmed by everything he said."

They discussed his mother,Jackie Kennedy, and her ability to raise both JFK Jr. and his sisterCaroline Kennedyto become "nice, productive people" in society. "She would be glad to hear you say that," JFK Jr. told Couric. "She took a lot of praise in being a good mother and I'm glad people think it worked."

Their conversation also included the topic of whether he'd run for politics and what he's most proud of his father,John F. Kennedy. JFK Jr. recalled the pride he felt learning that his father was the fourth most-popular president at the time. "He has a resonance that has endured beyond his years," JFK Jr. said.

Thinking back to their conversation, Couric, who launchedKatie Couric Media(KCM) in 2017, understood his appeal that the rest of the world felt too. "I think that's why he endeared himself so much to the public: He was kind of comfortable in his own skin," she says. "[But] searching a bit, I think. Figuring out his place in the world."

With the exponential re-uptick in discussion surrounding JFK Jr. and Bessette, thanks toRyan Murphy'sLove StoryFX series, Couric says she's not surprised by the perennial fascination the couple inspires.

"It has just been amazing for me to see how people are rediscovering JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, because of course it was the '90s and I was on theTodayshow, and I lived through that courtship as an observer," she says. "And I'll never forget, like most people, where I was when I found out that they had tragically died on their way to Hyannis Port."

In the wake of Kennedy's death and that of both Bessette sisters, Couric flew to Hyannis Port to anchor theTodayshow from the Cape Cod town. And, for all the public fascination the family endured, Couric acknowledges that the existence ofLove Storyischallenging for the family's next generation.

"I think people were really fascinated by the two of them when they were alive. I think [withLove Story] they're introducing this 'it couple' that was so glamorous and attractive and effortlessly chic to a whole new generation of people," she says. "And I do know that and think it must be very hard for the Kennedy family to have this resurface in such a palpable way. Jack Schlossberg has spoken out about his disgust with the whole thing."

In fact, as recently as March 1,Jack Schlossberg, the nephew of JFK Jr., criticizedLove Storyexecutive producerRyan Murphyagain for profiting off of his family's tragic history while discussing hiscongressional campaignwithCBS Sunday Morning.

"If you want to know someone who's never met anyone in my family, knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy," Schlossberg said when asked about the show. "The guy knows nothing about what he's talking about, and he's making a ton of money on a grotesque display of someone else's life."

"I would hope that Mr. Murphy would donate some of the millions of dollars of profits that he's making to maybe some of the causes that John championed throughout his life," Schlossberg added. "Maybe he would donate some of that money to the JFK library to help keep President Kennedy's memory alive, but he's not. He's making money. This is not a documentary."

Series executive producer Brad Simpson had previously responded to some of Schlossberg's earlier criticism in a statement toThe Hollywood Reporter, saying in part: "I understand that this show that we made with sincerity about these people is also the story of a tragedy in some people's lives. And for all of us who are making TV shows based on real events, you have to consider your ethical obligation to the family members and approach it with love and kindness," Simpson said. "What I hope is that when people watch the show, they will see our sincerity. They will see that we've approached this with love, and that we were trying to celebrate the life of Carolyn Bessette and JFK Jr."

They are so talented — everybody that's currently on that show is so great," Armitage, 17, exclusively toldUs Weekly. "I watch the show all the time and my whole family loves it. They're all doing such a great job as a cast and as a show."

Despite tuning in each week, Armitage broke down his hesitationabout joining — yet.

"I believe when you have a cast that great — and when you've already cemented a really great core cast — diluting it or adding other people doesn't mess it up. But I wouldn't want to barge in on what they got going on," he noted. "It's really great, so I would be honored to be part of it."

He continued: "There's no current plan in the works for it but, you know, if maybe a couple seasons down the line that happens ... It'd be really exciting and fun. Now that's one of those shows that I get to sit back and be a fan of. I don't even have to be a part of it. I just get to nerd out and love it."

Viewers met Sheldon's brother, Georgie (Jordan), which paved the way for his love story with Mandy (Osment) to inspire another spinoff,Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage.

"I'm lucky in a few ways. Because I started doing this when I was so young, I have a lot of people that will come to me and tell me, 'You look so different.' It's kind of interesting to think that if I start another project and do something completely different, it's a nice opportunity to differentiate myself in some way," Armitage explained. "But that's not even really my goal. I'm really proud of the work I did on Young Sheldon. I loved it. It was a super fun seven years. I am not running from it in the slightest. I would love to appear on Georgie and Mandy but for now just the fact that I can switch up and do something totally different is awesome and really fun."

His home minister, Ramesh Lekhak, was also arrested.

They were taken into custody one day after rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah was sworn in as prime minister and after a recommendation last week by a Nepali panel investigating violence during the protests that they should be prosecuted for negligence.

A total of 76 people were killed in two days of unrest, which led to Oli resigning.

Police spokesman Om Adhikari said both Oli and Lekhak were being detained at the Kathmandu Police Office and would be produced before the court on Sunday, a working day in Nepal.

"We have arrested them as per the recommendations made by the ‌investigation commission," he said.

Oli, 74 and who has had two kidney transplants in the past, was subsequently transferred to a hospital from the police office, witnesses said.

His lawyer Tikaram Bhattarai told Reuters that the arrest was unwarranted.

"They have said it (the arrest) is for investigation. It is illegal and improper because there is no risk of him fleeing or avoiding questioning," he said.

April weather forecast predicts 'major change' as heat dome moves

As the calendar soon turns to April, it appears that we can finally shed alltalk of the polar vortexuntil next winter asmilder weather takes hold across much of the eastern U.S. and a cool-down ends the western heat wave.

USA TODAY

A surge of warmth featuring temperatures above the historical average will impact the Southeast and parts of the eastern United States to start April,AccuWeather said in an online forecast. The pattern will support multiple days of temperatures in the 80s, with increasing risks for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall as a front advances later in the period.

Warmth, rain in central and eastern US forecast

Warmer air is forecast to overspread the central and eastern U.S. next week, according toAccuWeather.

"A long-lasting warm weather pattern may take hold across the southeastern United States next week, featuring multiple days with widespread highs in the 80s," said AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski in anonline forecast.

Along with the warmth will come some storminess,Weather.com said in an online forecast: "A pattern change will bring rain and storms back across much of the central and eastern U.S. next week. A major pattern change is forecast for the United States' weather in early April, with cooler weather in the West and warmer weather in the East.

Western heat relief

The prolonged and record-smashing heat wave across the western United States will give way to a series of Pacific storms as April begins, bringing cooler air, rain and mountain snow,AccuWeather said. While temperatures will drop significantly, precipitation totals are expected to remain limited in key drought areas.

Overall, across the West, unsettled weather is expected early in the month,NOAA's Weather Prediction Center(WPC) said.

The temperature forecast for early April shows unusual warmth is expected in the East and cooler weather in the West.

An atmospheric river should track across California, even into southern California, by Tuesday, March 31, but is currently forecast to remain too weak to cause flooding issues, theWPCsaid.

Although the precipitation may be on the light side, very welcome rain and mountain snow will be common across the Intermountain West with multiple rounds through the week.

Rainfall will generally be light, with only a few tenths of an inch possible in parts of California, including San Francisco. High-elevation snow is expected Monday night into Tuesday and possibly again later in the week, but totals will be limited compared to earlier winter storms.

However, gusty winds could be a concern across the Intermountain West to the Rockies with this pattern.

  • Authorities said Woods showed signs of impairment and was charged with driving under the influence

  • The crash follows previous accidents involving Woods, including a serious 2021 crash that left Woods with injuries that required surgery

Tiger Woods'mugshot has been released after the pro golfer was involved in arollover crashFriday afternoon in Martin County, Fla., an incident that left the 15-time major champion facing a charge of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The crashoccurred just after 1 p.m. near Jupiter Island, according to theMartin County Sheriff's Office.

At apress conferencehours later, Martin County Sheriff John M. Budensiek said Woods was not injured in the crash, nor was the other driver involved.

"Mr. Woods did not appear to be injured at all, and the other individual was not injured," Budensiek said, adding that Woods was "lethargic on scene because of what he was intoxicated on." He also confirmed that Woods "did exhibit signs of impairment."

According to authorities, Woods was alone in a Land Rover at the time of the crash. Budensiek said they're "not sure" whether Woods was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The crash occurred on South Beach Road when a pressure-cleaning truck pulling a small trailer was slowing down to turn into a driveway. The driver noticed a Land Rover "overtaking him at high speed," Budensiek said, and attempted to move to the side of the narrow, two-lane road.

Authorities said Woods allegedly attempted to pass the truck at high speed as it was turning, but in trying to avoid a collision, his vehicle struck the back of the trailer, causing the SUV to lose balance, tip onto its side, and roll over onto the driver's side before coming to a stop further up the road.

Woods exited the overturned vehicle through the passenger-side door, authorities said.

The news of the crash was first reported byABC News, and images of the overturned vehicle were later shared by local outletWPTV, which reported that Woods had not been injured.

The incident marks another car accident involving Woods, who previously sustained serious injuries in a2021 crash in Los Angelesthat required surgery. He was also involved in a separateincident in 2009, also near his Florida home.

Woods returned to competition earlier this week, participating in the TGL finals. It marked his first event in more than a year, and his Jupiter Links GC team lost to the Los Angeles Golf Club,ESPNreported.

Authorities said additional updates would be provided as the investigation continues.

1965 Timeless Classic Ranked Among 'Greatest Country Songs of All Time' Became a Long-Running No. 1 Hit

On March 27, 1965, 61 years ago today,Roger Millertopped the U.S.BillboardCountry Singles chart with his timeless classic country hit, "King of the Road." The track remained in the No. 1 spot for five weeks, selling over 10 million records.

Parade

The beloved track also earned the iconic singer-songwriter five trophies at the eighth annual Grammy Awards in 1966. They were for Best Contemporary (R&R) Single, Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance — Male, Best Country and Western Single, Best Country and Western Vocal Performance — Male, and Best Country and Western Song.

Written by Miller and produced byJerry Kennedy, "King of the Road" finds the iconic Texas-born singer crooning, with a mix of lighthearted humor, confidence, and pride, about a poor, nomadic lifestyle as a down-on-his-luck hobo. He paints a vivid picture of life's moments that come by chance, as he spends his days drifting from place to place, hopping on trains, and wearing worn-out shoes.

Despite his lack of material wealth, Miller's song shares a message of satisfaction due to independence and the idea of embracing freedom over financial security.

The Lyrics

Declaring himself a 'King of the Road,' Miller joyfully sings the lyrics: "trailers for sale or rent / Rooms to let, 50 cents / No phone, no pool, no pets / I ain't got no cigarettes / Ah, but, two hours of pushin' broom / Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room / I'm a man of means by no means / King of the road."

Though the inspiration for the song remains unclear, various stories on how Miller came up with the song lyrics have been passed around over the years. According toKivitv.com, he often wrote: "songs while on the road, scribbling down lyrics…. between all his concerts and TV appearances."

One rumor, according to the source, suggests Miller wrote the song from a memory in Boise, Idaho, while others claim he saw "a sign reading 'Trailers for Sale or Rent,'" which became the opening line of the song.

The Song Was Heard All Over the World

While "King of the Road" is known for being a major country hit, the song enjoyed crossover and internationalsuccess, reaching the No. 4 spot on theBillboardHot 100 chart and topping both the UK Singles and Norwegian charts. The timeless classic also placed at No. 60 onRolling Stone's 2024 list of 200 Greatest Country Songs of all Time.

Miller passed away onOctober25, 1992, at age 56, following a battle with lung and throat cancer. Since then, his song has continued to be a significant part of his legacy, with covers by artists such asRandy Travis,R.E.M.,George Jones, and more.

"Dr. Henry suffered a serious fall through an opening on the stage while performing her walk during the preliminary competition on November 19, 2025, resulting in an intracranial hemorrhage with loss of consciousness, a fracture, facial lacerations and other significant injuries," astatementfrom the Miss Universe organization read.

"She was immediately admitted to intensive care in Bangkok, where she remained in critical condition under constant neurological monitoring, and continues to require 24-hour specialist supervision."

Also in 2025, the finals of the Miss Universe pageant faced controversy, after the contestant representing Mexico, Fátima Bosch, was told to leave a group event by Nawat Itsaragrisil, then the president of Miss Universe for Asia and Oceania. He accused her of not doing all that was required of her.

Bosch was ultimately crowned the winner of that competition, and Itsaragrisilleft the organization.
