China ignores Trump's Hormuz request as the Iran war deepens and his Beijing trip slips

WASHINGTON (AP) — China won't help the United States reopen the Strait of Hormuz asrequested by President Donald Trump, but it is probably welcoming thedelay in Trump's highly anticipated tripto Beijing as the U.S. risks getting bogged down in the Middle East, analysts say.

Associated Press Chinese President Xi Jinping holds his cup of tea during the opening of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference at the Great Hall of the People, in Beijing, China, Wednesday, March 4, 2026. China Congress

The latest developments are unfolding as Trump's Iran war, in its third week, is faced with mounting pressure as oil has stopped moving through the strait and U.S. allies have refused to step up to secure the strait. That has produced concerns that China, the United States' biggest geopolitical rival, could stand to benefit from a war that some say was ill-considered.

"President Trump's request to delay his long-awaited summit with President Xi Jinping underscores how significantly he underestimated the fallout from Operation Epic Fury," said Ali Wyne, senior research and advocacy adviser for U.S.-China relations at the International Crisis Group. "A show of U.S. force that was meant to intimidate Beijing has instead served to puncture the illusion of U.S. omnipotence: Unable to reopen the Strait of Hormuz alone, Washington now needs its principal strategic competitor to help it manage a crisis of its own making."

The Chinese Foreign Ministry gave a nonanswer when asked if it would help reopen the strait but repeated its call for "parties to immediately stop military operations, avoid further escalation of the tense situation and prevent regional turmoil from further impacting the global economy."

Beijing, which had never officially confirmed Trump's state visit, originally scheduled for March 31, has signaled willingness to work with the U.S. to reschedule the visit by stating that the two sides "remain in communication." It even helped clarify that the postponement had nothing to do with Trump's request for China to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

On Tuesday, Trump said the Chinese "were fine" with the delay and claimed "a very good working relationship with China."

Sun Yun, director of the China program at the Stimson Center, said, "I think the Iran request is now going to be less pressing for China to fulfill." At the same time, Chinese diplomats have been engaging with countries in the Middle East, pledging a constructive role in easing tensions and restoring peace.

On Sunday, through the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, Beijing delivered to Iran an emergency humanitarian aid package of $200,000, earmarked for families of children and teachers killed in the bombing of the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school building in Minab, Iran, with the Chinese ambassador to Iran condemning the school attack.

State visit delayed

A delay in the state visit is welcome by both the Trump administration and China, said Brett Fetterly, a managing principal in the China practice at The Asia Group, a Washington-based consultancy.

"I think the political environment is difficult for the United States to have the commander in chief travel abroad while managing military operations," Fetterly said. "On the Chinese side, it doesn't hurt to play for more time, to better understand what exactly President Trump might want."

Arecent trade talk in Parisbetween the two governments appears to have yielded little agreement and suggested difficulties remain in addressing structural differences in trade, technology and economic security, Fetterly said. "At the end of the day, both sides really needed some time to define what the range of deliverables are," he said.

The U.S. business community has also expressed concern that preparations for the summit might not have been sufficient to produce substantive agreements.

Pivot away from Asia

Transfers of military assets from the Indo-Pacific region to the Middle East,, including a sizable portion of Marines deployed there as part of a rapid-response unit and an anti-missile defense system, have raised concerns that the U.S. could get distracted from its own stated priority to refocus on Asia.

"The longer this war continues, and the more forces that are shifted out of Asia, the more it will feed Asian allies' concerns about U.S. distraction and resource constraints," said Zack Cooper, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he studies U.S. strategy in Asia.

A delay in the state visit could also mean a delay in any arms sales to the self-governing island of Taiwan to deter attacks from Beijing, he said. China has vowed to take Taiwan by force if necessary, but the United States is obligated by its own law to give the island sufficient hardware to defend itself. The issue remains the thorniest in U.S.-China relations.

"I believe that China is happy to delay the visit and reap the benefits as the United States once again gets bogged down in the Middle East," Cooper said.

And Beijing probably doesn't need to do much, he added: "I think most Chinese experts and officials believe that the United States is undermining itself, so they just need to get out of the way."

Japan records trade surplus as export growth balances out weak China demand

TOKYO (AP) —Japanrecorded a trade surplus of 57.3 billion yen ($360 million) in February, according to government data released Wednesday, reversing from a deficit a month earlier.

Associated Press

Exports grew at a better-than-expected 4.2% in February to 9.57 trillion yen, the Finance Ministry's seasonally adjusted preliminary data show.

Imports grew 10.2% on-year to 9.51 trillion yen following a 2.5% contraction in January.

Japan posted a1.15 trillion trade deficitthat month.

Import costs are likely to rise as the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz due tothe war against Irandrives upoil and other energy prices.

Japan imports almost all its oil, and Brent crude — the international standard — has jumped in recent weeks to about $100 a barrel.

Geopolitical uncertainty, especially the war in Iran, loom large forJapan's export-reliant economy, but a weak yen is likely to work as a plus. The U.S. dollar has been trading at about 159 yen, when it was below 150 yen a year ago.

Shipments to China declined 10.9% from the same month a year ago, although demand was likely unusually weak due to this year's Lunar New Year holidays falling in February.

Those to the U.S. dropped 8%, as auto exports fell.President Donald Trump's tariffson Japanese autos, now at 15%, continue to weigh on Japan's automakers and auto supply manufacturers.

Exports to Europe held up, growing 17% in February from the same month a year ago. Exports to the rest of Asia also grew, by 2.8%.

Investors are eyeing what the Bank of Japan might do on interest rates as the central bank's policy board concludes its two-day meeting Thursday.

"Central banks are waiting to see if these elevated oil prices are a temporary blip or a running theme for 2026, in which case we may see more global peers pivot from a dovish to a hawkish stance," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade.

Investors are also closely watching what deals, if any, could come from the summit later this week between Trump and Sanae Takaichi, Japan's first woman prime minister.

El Salvador's Bukele proposes life prison sentences in nation that has imprisoned 1% of population

SAN SALVADOR (AP) —El Salvador'sPresident Nayib Bukele and his party are pushing forward a constitutional reform that would permit life prison sentences in a country that has imprisoned more than 1% of its population in its war on gangs.

Associated Press

The reform was proposed on Tuesday before El Salvador's legislature, which is firmly in the control of Bukele's party. The measure is likely to pass.

It comes after Bukele has pushed forward rounds of constitutional reforms, which have been sharply criticized for chipping away at checks-and-balances and undermining the country's delicate democracy.

"We will see who supports this reform and who dares to defend the idea that the Constitution should continue prohibiting murderers and rapists from remaining in prison," Bukele wrote in a post on X on Tuesday.

In August, the government pushed through another reform thatwould do away with presidential term limits, paving the way for Bukele to stay in power indefinitely. Legal experts widely consider Bukele's second term, that began in 2024 to violate the constitution, which prohibits consecutive reelection.

The proposed reform builds upon other measures Bukele has taken to combat El Salvador's gangs, including a state of emergency that began in March 2022 following a wave of gang violence.

The measure, which is meant to be temporary but has been extended for nearly four years, suspends key constitutional rights and has led to around 91,300 people being detained.

Human rights groups have documented cases of arbitrary detentions for years, with one group even alleging before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) that the vast majority of those imprisoned under the state of emergency were arbitrarily detained. Bukele sharply criticized the allegation, but he has said that 8,000 innocent people have been released.

Bukele's government has also gone after its enemies, detaining critics and activists, and increasingly forcing journalists and opposition voices tochoose between exile or prison.

Those detained under the state of exception are held in prisons with little evidence, under vague accusations by authorities, and with very little access to due process. Prisoners are often judged in mass trials and lawyers regularly lose track of where their clients are.

Officials in Bukele's government have previously vowed that gang members detained"will never return"to the streets.

NASCAR suspends Daniel Dye after livestream mockery of IndyCar's David Malukas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) —NASCARdriverDaniel Dyewas suspended Tuesday — the second known major penalty of his racing career — for mocking IndyCar driver David Malukas during a recentlivestream.

Associated Press

In the video, which circulated Tuesday on social media, Dye used voices that made inferences about Malukas' sexuality. He mimicked Malukas' voice at one point.

Dye is a Truck Series for driver Kaulig Racing, which also suspended him. NASCAR ordered Dye to undergo sensitivity training.

Dye apologized to Malukas in a social media post, calling his comments "careless."

"I chose my words poorly and I understand why it upset people," he wrote. "I'm sorry to anyone who was offended. That's now I want to represent myself.

"I have some close friends in the LBGT+ community who would never want to feel less of themselves because of what I said, and that's exactly why I should hold myself to a higher standard."

He said conversations with those friends made him recognize that "a true friend would know better than to act the way I did."

Malukas, a 24-year-old driver for Team Penske, often posts pictures on social media with a girlfriend.

This is the second time Dye has been suspended.

He was 18 and racing in the ARCA series when he was arrested at a Dayona Beach, Florida, high school and charged with felony battery for approaching a classmate and punching the student in the groin area.

The victim was treated at a hospital for a potential ruptured testicle.

Dye said it was a game and he'd be exonerated.

He was instead indefinitely suspended by ARCA, which is owned by NASCAR. Dye was reinstated when the charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Dye in his third full season of racing in the Truck Series. He moved to Kaulig Racing this year to drive for Ram in the automaker's return to NASCAR competition. Through three races, his best finish is 13th at Atlanta.

NFL season starting on Wednesday in new quirk

The 2026 NFL season is kicking off a bit earlier than usual.

The season opener will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 9, instead of the usual Thursday, according toThe Wall Street Journal.

As defending champs, the Seahawks will almost assuredly host that game against a still unknown opponent at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The game will air on NBC, according to the report.

Despite talks of the league starting the season with the 49ers-Rams bout in Melbourne, Australia, that game will take actually place on Thursday of the opening week.

The NFL started each of the past two seasons with an international game on the first Friday of the season.

But with the season starting the second weekend of September, the league can't schedule a game on the opening Friday due to the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, which prevents the NFL from scheduling games on Friday nights from mid-September to mid-December.

The league's full schedule and matchups are expected to be released in May.

The move to Wednesday marks yet another example of the NFL's expanding dominance of the sports calendar.

In 2024, theNFL held two games on Christmas Daydespite it being a Wednesday, fully stepping over the NBA's usual marquee holiday slate.

A year earlier, theNFL added a Black Friday game.

Earlier this month,ESPN's Adam Schefter reportedthat the NFL was "exploring" adding a game on Thanksgiving Eve.

League brass also appears to be pushing to add another game to the schedule, jumping to 18 gamesafter having just moved to 17 games in 2021.

The NFL has also set its eyes on the international market in recent years, playing a record seven games overseas in 2025, with matchups in Brazil, Ireland, England, Germany and Spain.
