Student shoots a teacher at Texas high school before fatally shooting self, authorities say

A 15-year-old student shot a teacher at a Texas high school and then fatally shot himself Monday, according to authorities, who were still investigating what led to the early morning attack.

Associated Press

No other injuries were reported at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde, a small but growing city near San Antonio.

The teacher was taken to a nearby hospital. Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds said hours after the shooting that he did not know her condition.

"What happened today is something no community ever wants to face, but we prepare for something that we hope never occurs," Reynolds said.

He said the student shot the teacher before turning the gun on himself. Reynolds said investigators were working to understand the relationship between the student and the teacher and looking into how the firearm was obtained.

The small campus of roughly 250 students was placed on lockdown shortly after 8:30 a.m., according to the school. One student told San Antonio television stationKSATthat they heard loud bangs coming from a room on the second floor and then heard screaming.

Another student told the TV station that she heard five shots and yelling before her debate teacher told students to get inside a classroom.

Students were bused to a nearby middle school, where parents stood in long lines, some praying, as they waited to be reunited. Reynolds said the family members of the shooter had also gone into in the reunification line.

"We're trying to collect as much information as we can from witnesses," Reynolds said.

Jesse Lopez, a parent, told KSAT that it will be difficult to tell his daughter that she has to eventually go back to class.

"For one, she has autism, and she'll be afraid to go back, she'll be real afraid to go back," Lopez said.

The school canceled classes for Tuesday but counselors would still be made available for students and families, principal Julie Wiley said in a statement. She did not provide details about the teacher's condition.

"Our hearts are with everyone impacted, especially that teacher, their family, and our school community," Wiley said. "We know this has been a difficult day."

The high school, which is part of the Comal Independent School District, focuses on academics and skills to prepare students for college, according to the district's website. Its curriculum is centered on science, technology, engineering, arts and math, known as STEAM, with electives that include cybersecurity and engineering.

The school opened in August 2020 with a freshman class. It has since grown to offer grades nine through 12.

FAA flags these GA airports as collision 'hot spots'. What it means

With all eyes on thenation's airports, federal regulations have flagged locations across the country as possible risk spots for collisions or confusion on the runway.

USA TODAY

The report from the Federal Aviation Administration comes as recent events in aviation pile on the TSA chaos. An Air Canada flightcollided with a firetruckin New York City on March 22, a passenger made averbal bomb threatSunday night while taxiing on a Frontier flight in Atlanta and theRaleigh airportwas evacuated after an anonymous threat Monday morning.

The FAA identified "hot spots," or locations "with a history or potential risk of collision or runway incursion, and where heightened attention by pilots/drivers is necessary," according to the report.

Five airports in Georgia made the list, including the second busiest airport in the world.

Atlanta DeKalb-Peachtree (PDK)

DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, located in Chamblee off Buford Highway, had three hotspots on the property.

  • Southbound traffic on taxiway B missed the turn on taxiway A coming from two runways

  • Pilots on one runway, 03R, often fail to hold at another runway, 03L

  • Aircraft that are on a taxiway heading toward a runway are instructed to hold short, but officials say they "often enter the runway without authorization"

DeKalb-Peachtree may seem like a smaller airport compared to the beast that is Hartsfield-Jackson, but it remains thesecond busiest airport in the state. The airport averages 228,000 take-offs and landings each year, and takes on passenger crafts like business jets, aircraft charters, training aircraft, helicopters, and personal planes.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

The Atlanta airport has been the center of passenger chaos as wait times hit well over four hours at the beginning of last week. In the days since, the times have gone down significantly, and as of Monday airport officials were back to recommending travelers arrive at the airport two hours before their flight.

There are two "hot spots" at the airport that the FAA flagged:

  • Between two taxiways, there is a relatively short distance to the hold line for aircraft, and the hold bar is tilted

  • Officials note the same issue in the intersection on the other side, and urge pilots to "caution transitioning between the parallel runways"

While other airports may land more flights, Hartsfield-Jackson moves the most passengers by far, and a collision between planes would throw a significantly sized wrench in domestic travel across the country.

Augusta Regional at Bush Field (AGS)

The Augusta Regional airport just has one "hot spot."

Federal officials note the intersection between taxiway E and Runway 17-35 as a possible collision location.

Augusta Regional hosts flights from Delta and American Airlines, and is a major hub during the Masters golf tournament where hundreds of private planes make their way to Georgia with golf patrons.

Columbus Airport (CSG)

Columbus Airport, another small, regional airport, also takes flights from Delta and American Airlines and made the FAA watch list.

  • Pilots should "remain vigilant converging (taxiway) geometry"

  • Pilots should "remain vigilant" by checking signage and pavement markings in the area of the airport

CSG acts as the primary airport for Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning) located about 30 miles away.

Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV)

While shared between Savannah and Hilton Head, South Carolina, this coastal airport is the second international airport to make the list in Georgia.

FAA officials noted two potential areas of issue:

  • There is a section along taxiway E that is not visible from the air traffic control tower

  • There is a section on taxiway A coming from runway 1 that is not visible from the air traffic control tower

The airport has regularly been voted one of the best airport experiences in the country, where rocking chairs and a layout that mimics the historic town it shares make it a unique travel experience.

Hanna and Haley Cavinder Reveal the Sweet Twin Secrets Only They Know About Each Other (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Since they began posting to TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic, the basketball players have been attached at the hip

  • However, no one knows the other better than each other, and the pair break down some of the things that they think their followers wouldn't know about them

Hanna and Haley Cavinder have always been two-of-a-kind.The twin sisters have been on social media since the early days of the pandemic — earning them a following of nearly five million — and are also equally as famous for their collegiate basketball careers.

They were at the forefront of student-athletes signing endorsement deals, after a groundbreakingNCAA decisionin 2021 thatallowed student-athletes to profitfrom their name, image and likeness (NIL).

Together, the two have played basketball at California State University, Fresno; the University of Miami and, Haley later went on to play for Texas Christian University, coming out of retirement in 2023.Hanna moved with Haleyto Texas but decided to remain retired. Now, following their graduation, the twins are stepping into their most mature era yet, as they partner withBetMGM for the Court of Legendsspeakeasy basketball experience at the Bellagio in Las Vegas during the final weekend of the NCAA Division 1 basketball tournament. The experience will also include a face off between Hanna and Haley on Sunday, April 5.

Even though they've graduated, the girls are not so quick to leave behind the world of college basketball (though, as former NCAA athletes, they are excited to finally be able to bet on some March Madness games). In fact, the twins are the first to admit that they're highly competitive — not just as athletes, but with each other. If they're in the gym and Haley does one more rep than Hanna, then Haley will tack on a few more just to one up her sister. They frequently settle disputes by playing a game of one-on-one basketball — and have been doing so since high school. When Hanna didn't want to drive to school one morning, she'd set an on-court challenge to her sister to settle the dispute. If there were dishes in the sink that neither wanted to do, Haley would do the same.

As the pair have grown older, they've "matured" and cooled off on the competitiveness — but only slightly. For sisters who have always been linked in the public eye, perceptions of them have always centered around them both. However, the twins say that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to each other and, being twins, they're bound to know best.Hanna calls Haley the "most aware human being I've ever encountered in my life."

Nothing can shake her mental clarity, Hanna jokes — not even when she's had a "little tequila.""That's in my maid of honor speech," Hanna adds, laughing, of her sister's upcoming nuptials to Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson."What wouldn't people know about Hanna?" Haley ponders. "I always call her my 'twin-ager.' She can handle so many things at one time. Without her, we wouldn't be us today because growing up, basketball and stuff, I was always tunnel vision on one thing."

"I very struggle a lot with compartmentalizing and Hanna can handle so many things at once and she doesn't even feel like there's anything on her," she continues of her younger (by just one minute) sister. "She handles it with such grace.""She's the heartbeat behind our brand," Haley adds.Despite the pair's competitiveness, they know that they're stronger as a team than apart. The two have made it their mission to be inspiring to other young girls, even as they leave the basketball world behind in a traditional sense."Whether it's basketball or just giving your advice and having such a big platform, I think we have a huge responsibility to encourage and uplift girls, and not even just younger ones. Other girls will come to us for advice, and I think that's just a big responsibility when you have a platform," Hanna says.

Super Bowl heading back to Las Vegas in 2029

Associated Press

Las Vegas getting the Super Bowl back afterKansas City defeated San Francisco 25-22in overtime in February 2024 seemed like only a matter of time.

"We're excited to bring the Super Bowl back to Las Vegas and provide our fans another incredible experience in one of America's greatest sport and entertainment destinations," Goodell said in a statement.

"Super Bowl LVIII demonstrated the scale, energy and hospitality the city brings to global events, and we look forward to working alongside the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Raiders and the community to deliver an even greater experience this time around."

New England store's free furniture promo in danger of backfiring spectacularly thanks to UConn basketball teams

After massive — and dramatic — wins in the Elite Eight, both the UConn men and UConn women are just one win away from playing in the NCAA tournament final. For one New England furniture store, that reality could result in millions of dollars in lost profit.

Yahoo Sports

Jordan's Furniture— a furniture chain in the multiple states of New England — ran what is looking like a potentially costly "UConn Championship Promotion" that is now just two wins away from paying out.

Here's how it works: Any person who purchased "eligible merchandise" from Jordan's between Jan. 20 and Feb. 16 would receive a rebate for their purchase — essentially making it free — if both UConn basketball teams played in their respective finals.

Well, following theUConn men's dramatic late win over Duke, both teams remain just one win away from making Jordan's pay out.

It's not the first time Jordan's has bet on a New England team and lost big. The outlet ran the same promotion for the Boston Red Sox in 2007. When the Red Sox won the World Series later that year, the furniture storepaid out roughly $30 million, per the Hartford Courant.

Jordan's is able to mitigate some of those costs by taking out insurance to manage its risk. Jordan's senior vice president of marketing Linda SanGiacomo told the Courant the store took out insurance on the UConn bet as well.

She added that the store is hoping UConn pulls off the feat so customers can earn free furniture.

"Jordan's takes out insurance policies to mitigate risk while maintaining engagement," SanGiacomo said. "For the UConn campaign, we purchased insurance at an estimated sales level so that we can deliver on our commitments when they win. As a company we are excitedly rooting for the UConn men's and women's teams. We want both the teams to make it to the finals and we want to give away free furniture to our great customers."

UConn players are in on the promotion as well, appearing in ads for Jordan's. Men's player Silas Demary Jr. said being involved in commercials made him even more motivated to make the promotion happen, per the Courant.

"Yes, for me, that gives me something else to play for, something added to play for," said Demary, who transferred from Georgia. "If we both win, all these people get free furniture. That's something I want to do and be a part of."

In order for that to actually happen, of course, both UConn teams need to win their next games. For the women, that will occur Friday against the winner of TCU and South Carolina. Those teams play Monday.

For the men, it will take place Saturday, when the team takes on Illinois in the Final Four.

Stewart was quick to take blame off the three-time NBA All-Star, who said he apologized immediately after the incident that went down during the Knicks 135-138 loss to the Indiana Pacers in overtime and sent a basketball to her for her grandson.

"You didn't know. It's not your fault, it's my fault for wearing open-toe shoes to a basketball game," said Stewart, who recalled the exact moment and feeling when Brunson toppled onto her on the sidelines.

"You don't sweat... your arm was cold," Stewart told Brunson on the podcast. "You had fallen, and you jumped up really fast. I remember saying to you, 'It's okay.' You had no idea that you had hurt me. I didn't say you hurt me, but I said, 'It's okay'."

"It wasn't okay at all," she added with a laugh.

Stewart then said she went to the Hospital of Special Surgery (HSS) on the Upper East Side of Manhattan after the game to get her toe checked out.

"They've named it the 'Stewart-Brunson fracture,' " she shared. "I have an X-ray, I'm going to leave you a picture of it... it was actually a break, so anyways, it's better now."

"See those open-toe shoes? Never, ever wear open-toe shoes to a game like that when you're sitting on the floor," Stewart said on the show. "That's why I'm wearing open-toe shoes [now], because that's the only kind of shoes I can wear now."

If that wasn't enough, Stewart added that because the game went into overtime, she "couldn't get up and leave to go take care of my toe," which made things "more painful."

"I knew it was broken immediately. And he sat on my lap, comes crashing down...." she continued, explaining that 29-year-old Brunson wasn't aware of the situation.

At the time, Stewart didn't tell Brunson about the break, but she did tell his parents, including his dad and former Knicks player turned assistant coach,Rick Brunson, and that they thought it was "so funny."

"All I got out of it was a signed basketball for my grandchild," she joked.
