Smoke rises after a reported strike on Shahran fuel tanks, amid the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, in Tehran

DUBAI/BEIRUT, March 13 (Reuters) - The leaders of Iran, Israel and the United States all voiced defiance and vowed to fight on as the Middle East war approached the two-week mark on Friday, killing thousands of people, disrupting the lives of millions of others and shaking financial markets.

New Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first defiant ‌comments, read out by a television presenter on Thursday, vowing to fight on and keep the Strait of Hormuz shut, and calling on neighboring countries to close U.S. bases on their territory or ‌risk Iran targeting them.

"I assure everyone that we will not neglect avenging the blood of your martyrs," said the hardline cleric, who is close to Iran's top military force. It was not clear why he did not appear in person.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held his first news conference since the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran started on February 28, taking questions via video-link and issuing a veiled threat to kill Khamenei and defending the military assault.

"I will not detail the actions we are taking. We are creating the optimal conditions for toppling the regime but I won't deny that I can't tell you with all certainty that the people of Iran will topple the regime - a regime is toppled from the inside," Netanyahu said.

"But we can definitely help and we are helping."

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has already declared that the U.S. and Israel won the war, said on Thursday that the United States stood to make significant money from ‌oil prices driven higher because of supply issues tied to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

"The United States is the largest Oil Producer in the World, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money." Stopping Iran from having nuclear weapons was far more important, he said on social media.

U.S. POLITICAL FALLOUT

Trump's comments angered opposition Democrats, who accused the Republican president of caring too little about the war's impact on average Americans and demanded more information about civilian casualties, particularly a strike that killed dozens of children at an Iranian girls' school.

Trump's administration has not provided a public assessment of the expected cost or duration of the war, which is unpopular with the American public, or a strategy for Iran after the fighting stops. The president and top aides have also given conflicting reasons for starting to fight.

The Strait of Hormuz is the shipping route through which a fifth of global oil normally passes along Iran's coast.

The prospect that one of the most severe disruptions ever to global energy supplies could endure sent oil prices up about 9% to $100 a ‌barrel on Thursday, despite the announcement on Wednesday that developed countries would release 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves, and after falling earlier in the week on hopes of a swift end to the war. [O/R]

U.S. stocks fell on Thursday, with the S&P 500 notching its biggest three-day percentage drop in a month.

The death toll in the unpredictable war has risen to more than 2,000 people, most in Iran. Almost 700 have died in Lebanon, where Israel has targeted central Beirut and ordered residents out of a swathe of the south in an offensive against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

At his press conference, Netanyahu vowed to keep hitting Hezbollah in Lebanon, after the group opened fire on March 2 to avenge Israel's killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei's father, at the start of the war.

Drones have been reported flying into Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab ‌Emirates, Bahrain and Oman, undermining U.S. and Israeli claims to have knocked out much of Iran's stock of long-range weapons. Two tankers were set ablaze in the port of Basra in Iraq, after being hit by suspected Iranian explosive-laden boats.

Hours earlier on Thursday, three other ships were struck in the Gulf. Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for at least one attack - on a Thai bulk carrier that was set ablaze. Another container vessel reported being struck by an unknown projectile near the UAE.

IRAN SECURITY FORCES 'EVERYWHERE'

Inside Iran, residents said ‌security forces were increasing their presence to demonstrate continued control.

"Security forces are everywhere, more than before. People are afraid to come out, but supermarkets are open," teacher Majan, 35, said by phone from Tehran.

Israel and the United States have called on Iranians to rise up and topple their clerical rulers.

Many Iranians want change and some openly celebrated the elder supreme leader's death on February 28, the war's first day, after his forces had killed thousands of anti‑government protesters in January. But there has been no sign of organised dissent while the country is under attack.

Iran's message is that its strategy now is ‌to impose prolonged economic shock to force Trump to back off. A spokesperson for Iran's military command said on Wednesday the world should prepare for oil prices of $200 a barrel.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Thursday he did not expect that to happen, but did not totally rule it out. "I would say unlikely, but we are focused on the military operation and solving a problem," Wright told CNN.

'No funds for food.' TSA agents sleeping in cars as shutdown continues.

As thepartial government shutdowncontinues and Transportation Security Administration officers work without pay, many are struggling to stay afloat financially.

USA TODAY

The partial shutdown began in mid-February after Congress failed to pass funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees TSA.Roughly 50,000 TSA officersare continuing to work but without regular pay during the funding lapse, raising concerns about staffing shortages and absenteeism asspring break travelramps up.

"Numerous employees have reported to me that their bank accounts are at zero or negative," Johnny Jones, Secretary-Treasurer of AFGE TSA Council 100 and a Dallas-based TSA worker, told USA TODAY. "No funds for daycare, no funds for food. They just want to know why the hell they can't get paid when we have money toshoot missilesinto other countries."

Friday, March 13, will be the first time TSA workers miss their full paychecks.

As TSA officers work to find ways to bridge their own financial gaps, Jones acknowledged that airport security lines havegotten longer.

"There is a significant part of the workforce that is working other duties outside of their duties at TSA," he said. "I hope they're not panhandling at the airport. There are people who are staying at the airport, not leaving, they're sleeping in their car to conserve gas, consolidating their work life."

Fewer agents are showing up to work as a result, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying in a March 11social media postthat "300 (TSA) officers quit," citingCBS News reporting. The rates of officers calling out have more than doubled since the shutdown began, the same CBS report found, with some airports facing the absence of more than 50% of their frontline TSA workforce on some days.

"Today, travelers are facing TSA lines of up to nearly 3 hours long at some major airports, causing missed flights and massive delays during peak travel," TSApreviously told USA TODAY in a statement. "These frontline heroes received only partial paychecks earlier this month and now face their first full missed paycheck, leading to financial hardship, absences, and crippling staffing shortages."

Some airports, like Denver International Airport (DEN), have even taken up collections to help TSA employees with some basic assistance.

"Once again, DEN's federal employees are working tirelessly to ensure our airport operates efficiently and safely without getting paid. TSA employees just missed their first paycheck, and as we enter a busy Spring Break travel period, we want to do what we can to ease the stress of this moment," DEN CEO Phil Washington said in astatement. "That's why we are calling on the public, our passengers, and other airport employees to donate grocery store and gas gift cards to help make this moment a little more bearable for these federal workers."

The collection is meant to help TSA officers purchase necessities while they're not getting paid.

"Donated gift cards can be from stores like King Soopers, Safeway, Walmart, Costco, and Target. Ideal gift cards include those stores that sell both gas and food. Denominations should be in $10 or $20 gift cards only. Visa gift cards cannot be accepted," thedescription of the eventsays.

Travelers wearing protective face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 go through security before boarding a flight at the airport in Denver, Colorado, on Nov. 24, 2020.

Jones said other airports are doing similar charity drives, but added that it can be harder to get and distribute assistance at larger airports. He noted that some TSA employees have lost their housing when they were unable to pay rent on month-to-month leases as a result of the funding lapse.

"We took the oath to uphold the Constitution and protect the public, but the people who are elected to Congress took the same oath, but they don't do their job and fund the government," Jones said. "We are caught in partisan politics."

Do TSA PreChek, Global Entry still work?

Despite the disruption, DHS and TSA say expedited screening programs remain available.TSA PreCheck is still operational, allowing enrolled travelers to move through dedicated lanes and typically avoid removing belts and light jackets during screening. The agency reversed an earlier plan to suspend the program after pressure from airlines and lawmakers concerned about further slowing airport checkpoints, although officials warned that TSA PreCheck lanes could be closed on a case-by-case basis based on staffing during the shutdown.

DHS announced Global Entry lines would reopen on March 11, saying the change was meant toalleviate disruptionsfor travelers amid the shutdown.

How can I check the TSA line wait times at my airport?

Travelers worried about long security lines cancheck real-time wait estimatesbefore heading to the airport.

TSA publishes historical andlive checkpoint wait-timeinformation on its MyTSA mobile app and on the agency's website, where travelers can search by airport and time of day.

Travelers should be aware that some information on theTSA website isn't being updatedbecause of the ongoing government shutdown, the agency said in a statement on Feb. 17. Banners on both the TSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection websites warn that, "Due to the lapse in federal funding, this website will not be actively managed."

That's different fromthe last government shutdownthat ran from October to November 2025, when TSA security wait times continued to update as usual.

This time, TSA confirmed to USA TODAY via email that both theMyTSA mobile appand the agency's wait‑time tracker are down because of a partial U.S. government shutdown now in its fourth week.

The app is also supposed to show whether TSA PreCheck lanes are open. However, some airports also publish their own checkpoint wait times on official airport websites or social media feeds. Checking those before leaving for the airport can help travelers decide whether they need to arrive earlier than usual.

Kirk Cousins' 5 best landing spots after Vikings sign Kyler Murray

Many anticipatedKirk Cousinsand the Minnesota Vikings could reunite during NFL free agency. Instead, Minnesota has tapped a different veteran quarterback to serve as its challenger toJ.J. McCarthyin 2026.

USA TODAY Sports

TheVikings have agreed to a one-year, veteran minimum contract withKyler Murray.

While Minnesota will only foot a $1.3 million bill for the No. 1 overall pick from the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray will make a total of $36.8 million for the season. His former team – the Arizona Cardinals – will pay the remainder of the $35.5 million owed to him.

Murray was one of the final quarterback dominoes to fall during NFL free agency.Geno Smith,Tua TagovailoaandMalik Willishave all landed with new teams during the offseason whileDaniel Jonesreturned to the Indianapolis Colts after a successful 2025 season with the team.

Cousins is now the top veteran signal-caller available on the market. The 37-year-old should be in demand for several teams looking for experience and a potential stopgap starter at the position.

Where could Cousins go after the Murray signing? Here's a look at his top landing spots as the NFL's quarterback carousel continues to spin.

Kirk Cousins landing spots

Las Vegas Raiders

Las Vegas is almost certainly going to select Indiana's Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. However,The Athletic's Dianna Russinireported the Raiders would prefer not to start the Heisman Trophy winner immediately and that the team could target a potential veteran in NFL free agency because of that.

Cousins has 167 career starts under his belt and would be an ideal mentor for Mendoza as he acclimates himself to the NFL.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers are still waiting onAaron Rodgersto make a decision about his future. If the 42-year-old returns for another season, Cousins wouldn't be an option for Pittsburgh. But if Rodgers calls it quits, Mike McCarthy could consider targeting Cousins as a different veteran stopgap to steer the team.

The Steelers were exceedingly patient with Rodgers last offseason – he didn't officially sign until June – and may give him that grace again in 2026. With that in mind, Cousins may not be willing to wait around to see if Pittsburgh's job opens up.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns are another AFC North team that would be a sensible option for Cousins. Cleveland has a lot of resources tied up inDeshaun Watson,Shedeur SandersandDillon Gabriel, but Cousins has more experience than Sanders and Gabriel and has enjoyed far more sustained success than Watson.

That could be enough to convince new Browns coach Todd Monken to make his wide-open quarterback competition a three-way battle.

Cincinnati Bengals

If Cousins settles for a backup gig, he may have an interest in joining the Bengals.Joe Burrowhas missed a combined 16 games over the last three seasons andSean Clifford– who has never taken a regular-season NFL snap in his career – is currently his lone backup.

Cousins would provide the Bengals a steady hand behind Burrow in the event the No. 1 pick from the 2020 NFL Draft is banged up again. If he isn't granted an opportunity to compete for a starting job, he could relish a chance to play with a strong stable of weapons highlighted byJa'Marr ChaseandTee Higgins.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are another team that could use a backup quarterback.Gardner Minshewleft the team in free agency whileChris Oladokun(4.3 yards per attempt in 2025) andJake Haener(46.2% career completion rate) represent an uninspiring duo behindPatrick Mahomes.

Cousins would provide the Chiefs with plenty of experience behind Mahomes. He would also give the team insurance in case Mahomes isn't ready for Week 1, as the two-time NFL MVP attempts to recover froma torn ACL he sufferedin Week 15 of the 2025 NFL season.
