Shaun White gave his first televised interview since the news broke of his split from ex-fiancée, Nina Dobrev

PEOPLE broke the news that the couple had ended their engagement after five years together last week

During the interview, White opened up about the 2026 Winter Olympics — the first he won't be competing in in 20 years

Shaun White is ready to get back to his roots — literally!

The 39-year-old Olympian made an appearance on the 3rd Hour of Today on Tuesday, Sept. 16, just five days after PEOPLE announced the end of the athlete's engagement to actress Nina Dobrev.

Though White didn't comment on the split news, he did open up about his conflicted emotions heading into the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

"I'll be running around, definitely supporting my friends competing and just taking it in," he shared of the games. "This will be my first Winter Olympics where I'm not competing, so a lot of feelings there, but honestly, I'm excited to support and check it out."

The location is particularly poignant for the athlete, who shared that Italy holds a special place in his Olympic history.

"My first Olympics was in Italy that I competed at, so this is bringing a lot of memories going back to Italy. Should be fun," he said, before jokingly adding: "I might have to bring the hair back."

The redheaded star rose to fame with his thick, long-haired ginger locks, competing at his first Olympics in 2006 in Turin, Italy. Throughout his Olympic career he has picked up 13 gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals. He last competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics, finishing in fourth place in the halfpipe.

As for his personal life, White and Dobrev recently ended their engagement after five years together, a source told PEOPLE last week.

The insider close to the pair says "it was a mutual decision, and wasn't an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another."

The former couple were last photographed together on Aug. 31. Dobrev walked the red carpet at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival without her 5 carat diamond engagement ring on Sept. 7.

Neither Dobrev nor White have publicly commented on their split, but fans did take notice of the Vampire Diaries alum's TikTok days before the news broke.

In the video, the actress mouthed along to a sassy audio while dressed casually in a Nike sweatshirt and a bare face.

"How do you sleep at night knowing people don't like you? With no underwear, in case they wanna kiss my ass," the audio said. "What's your advice for women trying to fix their man? Listen, Bob the Builder, he's got 10 other women trying to fix him too, and you all look like a damn construction crew."
